Chucky Season 1 Episode 8 Recap & Analysis: An Affair To Dismember

It all comes down to this; in “An Affair To Dismember,” the seven-episode journey Chucky has taken fans on came to a head. Along the way, viewers have seen everything from clever kills to emotional character moments that filled the series with plenty of unexpected heart. Last time around, we argued that the show has struggled to balance its focus on new characters and its utilization of the franchise’s past. It was fair to hope that the season finale would finally find a solid middle ground between the two, and in the end, it delivered the best compromise hardcore fans and casual viewers alike could hope for.

From start to finish, characters from the past and present play meaningful parts in the story, both to help Chucky’s evil plot and to hurt it. As seen in the previous episode, Charles Lee Ray’s mission is centered around his ability to splinter his soul into multiple bodies. In fact, he intends to branch out into dozens of Good Guy dolls in order to produce an army of evil killing machines. This time around, the viewer gets a much-needed explanation as to how Charles can do such a thing. (Nica Pierce is an exception to the rule; otherwise, his spirit can only enter identical Good Guy dolls.) For a franchise that’s admittedly based on a bizarre concept to begin with, lumping another method to the madness into the mix is not a big ask. Instead, giving fans a clearer picture of the mythos makes the show stronger as a whole.

One of the best aspects of the finale has nothing to do with the episode itself; the day before the show aired, Chucky was greenlit for a second season. So this eighth episode had the chance to plant some seeds for the future. Most notably, it establishes a new potential antagonist moving forward. When Andy Barclay first arrived in the series, it seemed like he was destined for one final showdown with Chucky, and he gets it here. Kind of. He helps save Devon from Chucky’s clutches before the franchise OG is seemingly killed off. Andy comes back near the end of the episode, and he initially helps Jake and his friends save the day. But the surprising return of another familiar face derails his intent to stop Chucky once and for all. With a gun pointed at him, Andy gets roped into the doll’s vile scheme against his will.

RELATED: Chucky Season 1 Episode 7 Recap & Analysis: Twice the Grieving, Double the Loss

The last time we see Andy, he’s literally riding off into the sunset, not as a hero, but as an unwilling accomplice that might be forced to help Charles carry out his vision after all. This visual, along with previous teases that Andy might not purely be a good guy beneath the surface, leads the viewer to wonder if he might ultimately turn to the dark side. If so, he’d be a compelling villain for the second season, as he knows Chucky better than anybody. Jake and his friends barely stopped the doll this round; with Andy potentially on his side, Chucky might just be unstoppable.

For now, let’s focus on the present and the way Chucky‘s season finale executed the specific story that kicked off in the pilot. In the first episode, the show set Jake up as a killer-to-be, as he was clearly ripe for the picking for someone like Chucky to give him one final push toward madness. Since then, viewers have seen Jake come frighteningly close to giving in and unleashing his inner monster. But eventually, he defied the killer doll’s manipulation; powered by his own desire to be a good person and aided by a budding friendship (and romance) with Devon, Jake finds the strength to do the right thing and fight Chucky.

This arc concludes in “Affair To Dismember,” both as it relates to Jake’s romance with Devon and his battle with Chucky. Jake and Devon finally kiss, and in the final showdown (for now) between the doll and his former owner, Jake ironically shows Chucky the killer he always thought the boy was. At the climax of a fight between the two, Jake brutally squeezes Chucky until his eyes pop out of his head. Here, it’s clear that Jake has embraced exactly who he is, warts and all, and that’s a powerful message to send. But any celebration of his victory over Chucky won’t last long; with the knowledge that the series will return for a second season, viewers know that it’s only a matter of time before Charles seeks revenge as he always does.

All in all, “An Affair To Dismember” wraps up Chucky‘s first season. It doesn’t conclude the story in a neat little bow, but that’s most definitely a good thing. By leaving distinct loose threads at the end of this episode, the series leaves the fans eagerly waiting for the next adventures of Jake, Charles Lee Ray, and this colorful cast of characters. In the moment, this finale successfully closes up the opening season and sets the stage for what promises to be an equally captivating future.

Gintama: The Very Final Blu-ray, Digital, and DVD Release Detailed

The newest film in the Gintama series, Gintama The Very Final, will be available digitally on January 25, 2022, and on Blu-ray and DVD on February 8, 2022. Physical versions will include a 16-page art book that features different character art and storyboards.

The film is, of course, based on Hideaki Sorachi’s Gintama manga, but functions as a conclusion to the storyline of the anime. Sorachi wrote the storyline, while it was directed by the same director as the anime series, Chizuru Miyawaki.

“The countdown to destruction has begun! All will join to reclaim an Edo in grave peril! Earth is facing its darkest days, and the members of the Odd Jobs must come together to save it from an otherworldly menace,” says the official synopsis. “Old allies Gintoki, Takasugi, and Katsura strive their hardest for their own ideals, but standing in their way is someone with whom they share a sad history: Utsuro, an alternate personality of their former teacher and mentor, Shoyo. Shinpachi, Kagura, the Shinsengumi, members of the Kabuki District, and even former enemies will join their fight. As Utsuro’s power grows, Takasugi fights for his very life. Will Gintoki be able to put an end to all this?!”

The film was recently shown in theaters across the United States on November 21 and 22. There’s also a two-episode net anime called Gintama The Semi-Final, that serves as a prequel to the film.

The original Gintama manga ran from 2003-2019, and currently has more than 55 million copies in circulation. It also inspired a wealth of different anime adaptions that total over 350 episodes and two films, in addition to Gintama: The Very Final

Nicolas Cage is gearing up to play Dracula in Universal’s upcoming film Renfield, according to a recent report from Deadline.

The film is set to star Nicholas Hoult as Renfield, the familiar henchman of Dracula. Renfield will be directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War), with a script based on an original story outline from Robert Kirkman, who co-created The Walking Dead, Invincible, and many other comics for Image Comics.

In the original Dracula novel, R.M. Renfield was a servant of Dracula who is introduced as an inmate at a mental asylum. Initially thought to be suffering from delusions, it is later revealed that he is under the control of Dracula. It’s currently unclear how much of the original source material the upcoming film will draw from, but Deadline did report that the film is believed to be set in the “present day,” and will not be a period piece.

Big GTA Trilogy Update Fixes San Andreas Fog, Physical Releases Delayed

Rockstar Games has set the release date for the physical versions of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. The Xbox versions of the game, as well as the PlayStation 4 one, will release physically on December 17, 2021. The Nintendo Switch cartridge still has no official release date, but is currently set for sometime in “early 2022.” Rockstar has also coincidentally updated the trilogy with a big bug-fixing patch.

RELATED: Rockstar Apologizes for Busted GTA Remasters, Promises Some Fixes

This is only a 10-day delay for most platforms. Aside from the PS5 and PC ports, the physical versions of the game were originally slated to come out on December 7.

The delay comes alongside a large update that contains a ton of small fixes across all three games. The patch has various stability improvements, reimplements the cinematic camera, and fixes typos on the signs in each game. It will also no longer rain indoors during cutscenes.

There are also a ton of other improvements that are specific to each game, but the fog in San Andreas is one of the more noteworthy ones. As stated by Eurogamer, there is a new “Ground Haze” option that allows players to add back the smogginess that was missing from the title when it launched in its updated format. The move was already met with praise from fans, who were happy to see the game’s world look more like the original game. Some players criticized the clear skies because it made the game look smaller than it was as it was possible to see the whole map from up high.

Five Iconic Performances From Red Notice Star Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson recently returned on-screen as Red Notice hit Netflix. In addition to producing the movie, the 49-year-old actor played John Hartley, an FBI profiler teaming up with Ryan Reynolds’ Nolan Booth to catch the most-wanted art thief in the world, Gal Gadot’s Sarah Black, a.k.a. The Bishop.

RELATED: Red Notice Review: Netflix’s Heist Film Hinges on Its Three Magnetic Leads

After going full-time on his acting career in 2004, the former WWE champion has played many memorable roles. Here are his five best performances to rewatch after diving into the latest outing of the charismatic star:

Get Smart

Five Iconic Performances From Red Notice Star Dwayne Johnson

The first Hollywood appearances of Johnson were a couple of hits as both The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King did well at the box office. After that, “The Rock” struggled to establish himself as a credible action hero for a few years. Surprisingly, the former WWE star gained some reputation after switching to comedy. The litmus test that he didn’t fade in the genre was his performance with Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway in 2008’s Get Smart. Directed by Peter Segal, the long-feature adaptation of the ’60s series follows the misadventures of Maxwell Smart (Carell) in his attempt to become a field agent of the U.S. spy agency Control. In the story, Johnson is Agent 23, Max’s idol and the best spy at Control, who seems to be hiding something behind his dazzling smile and pleasant attitude.

Fast Five

It’s hard to argue with the claim that director Justin Lin’s work and Johnson’s charisma saved Fast and Furious, refueling the fans’ interest in the franchise. In his first appearance as Luke Hobbs in the high-octane action film franchise, Johnson portrayed a one-person army chasing Dominic Toretto’s gang as they planned the greatest heist attempted in Rio de Janeiro. The battle without quarters between Johnson and Vin Diesel recalled the Steve Austin/The Rock rivalry from the Attitude Era.

Fast Five is one of five movies in the franchise starring Johnson. While it’s not the highest-grossing Fast and Furious movie, it outperformed even the most optimistic expectations at the time. While Johnson took a break from the saga after seemingly arguing with Diesel, fans are still hoping for the showdown between the Diplomatic Security Service agent and Toretto. The fact that Diesel seems to have buried the hatchet after asking for Johnson’s return bodes well for the future.

Pain & Gain

In 2013, Johnson teamed up with The Rock director Michael Bay in one of the rare comedies helmed by Bay. The script deals with three bodybuilders who take by force what they can’t achieve with hard work. The former WWE star portrays Paul Doyle, a former convict with a cocaine addiction who turned to Christianity. The film is filled with over-the-top action as Paul and his pals, Daniel (Mark Wahlberg) and Adrian (Anthony Mackie), get their share of the American Dream by any means. Once more, Johnson showed excellent synergy with his fellow actors and proved he was unfairly overlooked as an actor.

Hercules

Johnson’s performance in 2014’s adaptation of the graphic novel by Steve Moore was a statement at the time as he held the entire story on his massive shoulders. In the story, Hercules uses the legendary tales surrounding his alleged divine origin to gain fame. Together with a band of mercenaries, he brings peace to Thrace, a land devastated by civil war and invasions.

Johnson took on a real Herculean task in delivering an entertaining performance as the titular mythological hero. While he dealt with a flawed script, the Californian actor perfectly embodied the not-so-much son of Zeus. He explored Hercules’ physicality in a way never seen before in the sword-and-sandal genre. Arguably, Johnson was the only actor who could keep the audience constantly guessing about his character’s nature, either divine or simply human.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

A group of teenagers finds themselves mysteriously trapped inside of a video game. After taking the physical shame of the adult avatars they picked, the game challenges the players to face dangerous adventures. While making their way out of the game and back to their old lives, the four teenagers will learn to work together and overcome their insecurity in this coming-of-age story. Both critics and general audiences liked the movie, which received a sequel in 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level.

When it was first announced that 1995’s Jumanji would have a direct sequel, fans didn’t know what to expect. The result was an entertaining comedy directed by Jake Kasdan. The cast also saw Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, all in great shape for the occasion. The bulked actor ironically jokes about his statuary physique without ever being predictable and shines throughout his role. The characters might be a bit stereotyped, but they work very well together.

Do you agree with the list of Johnson’s five best performances? Which one do you like the most? Let us know in the comments!

Aliens: Fireteam Elite Arriving on Game Pass Alongside Alien DLC, Updates, & New Content

Aliens: Fireteam Elite got overshadowed by Back 4 Blood for a few reasons, one of which was the latter’s launch-day inclusion on Game Pass. And while it is a few months after its release, Aliens: Fireteam Elite is now hitting Game Pass for PC and Xbox on December 14. This day will also bring a new season of content, updates, and DLC partially themed around Ridley Scott’s 1979 film to the co-op shooter.

There is a shop where players can spend their Fabrication Points on consumables. There are 20 rewards for surviving on various difficulty levels.

Players will also be able to track their stats with the new lifetime stats feature. This includes career stats, performance with each class and weapon, completed difficulties, and best completion time. The two new skins are modeled after the “space trucker” outfits from the first film.

Cold Iron still has at least two more seasons planned for the game. The third season coming in Q2 2022 will have a new class, another big feature, four new weapons, new perks, Challenge Cards, and cosmetics. The fourth season slated for Q3 2022 is supposed to have another mode, feature, new attachments, cosmetics, and more Challenge Cards.

Starfield Will Be ‘More Grounded’ Than Previous Bethesda Games

A featurette on Bethesda’s highly anticipated upcoming game Starfield has been released, diving into new concept art for the game and how the team is looking to approach the realm of sci-fi.

RELATED: Starfield Planned To Be Fully Shown in Summer 2022, More Revealed in AMA

In the video, Director of Bethesda Game Studios Todd Howard was joined by Art Director Matt Carofano and Studio Director Angela Browder to discuss the upcoming title. Howard noted that it was important to remember how long players likely will be playing Starfield, using The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as an example of players still going through a title up to 10 years later.

Howard also touched on the living world aspect of their games, going back through their history of titles like The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and the world of Fallout. Howard said a sci-fi world has always been something that they’ve wanted to try and tackle, and after diving into the worlds of fantasy epics and post-apocalyptic stories, now was their chance. “Going to space, I think there’s a magic in just defying gravity and taking off from a planet,” Howard said. “It’s an extremely difficult human endeavor.”

Carofano then touched on Starfield, saying that the game has “more realistic, science-based backing to it,” and noted the difference in approach the studio has when it comes to their past games and Starfield. “Whereas Skyrim is sort of an epic fantasy, this is a more grounded game and a grounded setting about exploration.”

Howard also noted that the mechanics of the world of Starfield will be unlike anything they’ve done before, but it will still have the staples of a Bethesda game, including playing in first-person, having small personal touches like coffee cups and other items littered about, and more. “Being able to watch the sunset and nighttime come, and just sit there and watch the world go by seems like it’s not gameplay,” explained Howard. “But it is vital to how you feel through the rest of it.”

Alongside the history of the studio and the discussion on Starfield, some concept art for the game was also included in the video, as well as some shots showcasing some of the other planets and worlds players will get to visit when it launches next year.

House of Gucci Review: Ridley Scott’s Crime Drama Rings Emotionally Hollow

After bringing us the historical epic known as The Last Duel, director Ridley Scott gives us his second movie of the year with House of Gucci, a biographical crime drama about Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga), a woman who marries into the wealthy Gucci family. As they build an empire of luxurious fashion, the family is sent down paths of darkness, control, and manipulation.

This film gave us one of the most promising trailers of the year. The advertising for this movie was enchanting, assuring a film about money, betrayal, family, power, sex, loyalty, scandal, ambition, and murder. Somehow, this movie has all of those things, but it’s one of the most boring misfires of the year. This movie could have been a cult classic, but it miraculously fails at everything it wants to be.

House of Gucci assembles one of the most impressive casts of the year. Lady Gaga portrays our protagonist, and Adam Driver plays Maurizio Gucci, the man Patrizia marries and builds the Gucci dynasty with. Our supporting cast includes the talent of Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek, and Al Pacino. These are all very skilled actors, and they’re all doing an excellent job. Leto is swinging for the fences, and at times, he feels like he’s in a different movie from everyone else, but he’s fascinating to watch as a result.

But this film is devoid of any life. This movie offers nothing for its viewers, from the bleak color grading to Scott’s surprising lack of a visual style. The film assembles an all-star cast and allows each to shine, but it has some of the blandest dialogue possible in a biopic. While Patrizia’s actions throughout the film are mildly interesting, the conversations have zero bites, and the story is unbearably thin. Every scene feels like it leads to nothing and the result is a movie that’s tedious to watch.

Perhaps the reason this film fails is the fact that it rings emotionally hollow. The movie doesn’t make you laugh or cry; it’s not funny or dramatic. It doesn’t make you angry. It doesn’t satisfy you. It’s just a long series of scenes where things happen, and you don’t care. One of the characters dies halfway through, and rather than soaking up the drama of the moment, the movie simply cuts to the middle of their funeral. The only time you care about anything is toward the final act when Patrizia’s life begins to spiral, and Gaga’s performance makes you feel bad for her.

Gaga is fully committed to her role, Driver is perfectly acceptable in his role, and even Pacino gets a chance to shout at the top of his lungs during a scene. But the editing and the musical score are all completely uninspired. In addition, the staging of every scene is so unremarkable that one hour feels like three. It genuinely feels like Scott was on cruise control during the entire production.

With a script that feels like the first draft of a great biopic, House of Gucci is ultimately an overlong slog. It’s a bloated film that goes on and on, recounting true events without an ounce of flair. Everyone who worked on this movie has done much better work, which makes this film so disappointing. You may be invested in the performances, but without a story strong enough to support its runtime of over two and a half hours, you will wait patiently for the credits to roll before bolting out of the theater and buying a ticket to a better movie.

SCORE: 4/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 4 equates to “Poor.” The negatives overweigh the positive aspects making it a struggle to get through.

Demon Slayer Mugen Train Arc Episode 7 – Set Your Heart Ablaze Review

Demon Slayer‘s Mugen Train Arc comes to a close with “Set Your Heart Ablaze,” and boy what an ending it is. Rengoku’s battle with Akaza comes to a bombastic end, and while there’s still nothing substantially new in this TV version, it makes sense.

RELATED: Demon Slayer Mugen Train Arc Episode 6 – Akaza Review

The end of the Mugen Train film managed to strike a phenomenal balance between action and emotion and makes the end of Rengoku all the more poignant. There’s a legitimate tension in the final episode’s action scenes, as Rengoku and Akaza use their sheer strength to grapple against each other; no special moves, no crazy attacks, just gritty strength. One of the things I find so interesting about Mugen Train is how melancholic its ending is.

Rengoku and the others successfully keep the demons from killing anyone, but it results in the death of one of the strongest Hashira of the Demon Slayer core. The final scenes even show Tanjiro and his friends wracked by despair. Tanjiro grapples with how “useless” he feels, and there’s no resolution that proves him wrong. I have to respect Mugen Train for putting such a bleak ending in, even while Rengoku provides the party with words of encouragement.

The best sequence of the entire episode is when it shows all the other Hashira learning about Rengokus death. It’s fascinating to see each one react in their own way; from the passive acceptance of Giyu Tomioka, to the sincere shock of Mitsuri Kanroji As Demon Slayer heads into its second season we’ll start seeing more of each of the other Hashira, and it’s great to see a little bit of their respective personalities come out.

As a finale episode “Set Your Heart Ablaze” works impeccably well. The ending was already great in the film version, but now it feels like a proper finale.

SCORE: 9/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 9 equates to “Excellent.” Entertainment that reaches this level is at the top of its type. The gold standard that every creator aims to reach.

Interview: Marvel Studios’ Andy Park on Designing Shang-Chi’s Costume

The hit Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now available on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD with a slew of bonus features.

Marvel Studios’ first Asian superhero-led movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. It will be led by Canadian actor Simu Liu (Kim’s Convenience) as Shang-Chi. The film also stars fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe newcomers Awkwafina as Katy, Tony Leung as Wenwu/The Mandarin, Meng’er Zhang as Xialing, Fala Chen as Jiang Li, Ronny Chieng, and Florian Munteanu as Razor Fist.

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke to Marvel Studios’ Andy Park about designing Shang-Chi’s costume, his past work on video games, and more.

Tyler Treese: Is there a particular artist or comic series that inspired you as a kid that made you want to go down this career path and work on comic books, concept art, video games, and films?

Andy Park: I grew up in the ’80s reading comic books and then that was right before Image Comics blew up. I fell in love with Marvel comics originally. Mark Bright and Bob Layton were known for Iron Man and that was the first character that I just completely fell in love with, especially the Iron Man Silver Centurion and then John Byrne. And then I just started discovering other artists and eventually when I discovered a guy named Jim Lee, it changed my world because his art was everything. Alan Davis is another one, but I had a whole shrine when I was in high school dedicated to Jim Lee with all his artwork. And then eventually Image Comics happened and I got hired by another guy. Those were my early comic book inspirations. I eventually drew comics for 10 years and then eventually made a switch into concept art in video games for the God of War series. And then I’ve been at Marvel Studios for the past 11 and a half years.

When you’re a creative first starting out, you imitate what you liked. How was the process of really finding your own style as an artist and not just trying to do your best Jim Lee impersonation, but really doing your best work and showing yourself through the art?

You learn back then just by copying. Every artist learns by copying. But I never wanted to be a clone. I never wanted to draw just like John Burn or Jim Lee or Alan Davis, but I’ll copy to learn. It’s like eventually when I went to art school and I learned how to paint, you do master copies, you’d look at John Singer Sargent and you’d do a Rembrandt and you’ll do a master copy to just learn, but you’re not trying to learn how to paint just like them or draw like them. So I’ve always had that mentality of not wanting to just be a clone. I think also another reason is because back then, especially in the early Image days, you would see certain artists and you could really see who their influences were and almost to a point where some people would even call them like a clone.

But then whenever you would say that, it was never like as good as that person that they’re imitating. So because I knew that, even if I ever tried to draw like Lee, am I ever going to draw better than him? No, I could only draw up to the point of being equal, but then even that’s like impossible. So I always try to be unique or at least try to have my own voice. So when I was drawing comic books, I did the same thing. I was mainly known for my Top Cow Marc Silvestri series that I did and Tomb Raider. But I didn’t necessarily draw like Marc Silvestri or Jim Lee. I tried to find my own voice and that still applies to this day in concept art. I definitely have influences through the decades, but I’m trying to have my own voice as an artist

You’ve shown some great concept art on your social media. What are some of your biggest contributions to Shang-Chi?

I had the honor of leading the visual development team. I got to have such amazing artists on the team and guide them and have conversations with Destin Daniel Cretton, Kevin Feige, and Jonathan Schwartz, the producer, and try to figure out this world. Anytime we were coming up with a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was always exciting. And being able to dive in the first Asian superhero in MCU was definitely exciting. So taking influences from the East, Chinese culture, Asian culture, and martial arts films throughout the years that I’ve loved and melding that all into the language that people are familiar with in the MCU, but coming with something fresh. That was an honor and exciting.

Specifically, I got to design the Shang-Chi hero costume. So that was really fun to try to take Simu Liu and try to figure out the story of what this costume was because it’s not just like a visual, there’s a story for every costume we do. So the idea of, as the story was developed, I came with the idea of incorporating the symbol that’s very prevalent in Chinese culture, as well as other cultures, the infinite knot. That’s very symbolic and has a lot of different meanings as well as the dragon scales or dragon skin that you see on his jacket. We looked at everything, even down to his shoes. Like that was an idea that I had because that the whole costume overall was given by his mom.

He’s a product of everything from his whole history, from his mom, which is basically his overall costume to his dad. Eventually, at the end of the movie, when the dad essentially relinquishes the rings and finishes his hero costume, the one thing I wanted to add to him was his shoes, which was his time in America. The 10 years he spent in America. That’s him being on his own, trying to find his own independence, who he is. So I wanted to have that one element where he kept his shoes, which is very western. So you have all those three things that kind of encompass this whole look.

You’ve worked on so many Marvel films at this point. I feel like it doesn’t get enough credit for the variety in terms of landscapes and the different genres. Does that help keep you refreshed? Because even though you’re staying in Marvel, you’re doing completely different things and jumping around.

Yeah, exactly. You hit the nail on the head because, as an artist, we’re very temperamental. We get bored. We need to continue to be inspired. Let’s say I was on the God of War video game. I was on that for five years, which was an amazing five years. But after five years of doing the same God of War, even though they’re different games, it was always in that Greek mythology. As an artist, I started getting antsy because I wanted to do something else besides like Greek togas and the same kind of Greek mythological animals. But I’ve been at Marvel Studios for 11 and a half years.

There hasn’t been a day, a month, a year that I’ve been bored or antsy because every single one of our films, even though it’s in the MCU, they all have their own genre, own flavor, and different tone. You add not only the visuals, but the directors that we get like Taika Waititi to Peyton Reed to James Gunn to Destin Daniel Cretton, all of these directors have different voices and different flavors. So how can you get bored? It’s almost as if you’re working for a whole new company or something very different, but there’s always the tying weave that keeps it all together, which keeps it exciting. You can’t get bored here.

You mentioned God of War. Working on those games, what is the biggest difference between the two mediums? And doing concept art for God of War, those games have such beautiful artwork and the scenes are amazing. Can you talk about how that has helped prepare you for this line of work?

God of War was amazing. I got hired by Charlie Wen who was the director of visual development at Sony at that time. I got to work for five years with such amazing artists and I learned more there than I did at art school because you’re just surrounded by amazing talent and the real-world designing, the challenges of concept art, and trying to get designs approved by a director. And video games, specifically for God of War, are fully fantastical. And we’re doing like these crazy creatures with these crazy power sets with these crazy visuals. It’s even less grounded than like the MCU or film because in video games, it’s kind of no-holds-barred.

You’re designing characters that are going to be made into 3D assets that are going to be played in-game. So you can kind of go wild and break a lot of rules, even with the way that you design costumes. You can go crazy. But the biggest differences when working in film, for live-action at least, we’re trying to make it look real. Like you have to make it look like it could actually happen outside your house and when you step out the door. Like this world can exist. These characters can wear these costumes. That creature can actually exist. And you’re going to believe it as an audience member. You don’t have to have that suspension of belief when it comes to video games because everything’s 3D.

That’s the biggest challenge in doing film because you always have to make it look real and believable. That’s not always easy. That’s why a lot of times you can go fully comic accurate, but then you get into a world of like, “Oh, now it looks cheesy and not real anymore.” So there’s that fine balance and that line you have to tread. How much can you push it here? How much can you push it there and make it accurate to the comics and respectful? But then, while doing that, also make it fully believable and something that people would be like, “Oh, that reminds me of the comic and I totally believe that.” And that’s versus if you go too far somewhere, you can be like, “Oh, that looks like the comic, but that looks cheesy.”

Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous Season 4 Review: Thrilling Family Fun

The Jurassic Park/World series is a tricky slope to traverse. There are only so many ways to show characters run from snarling, man-eating monsters; and, as we saw in 2018’s misguided Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, only so many ways to plausibly stretch the formula without resorting to buffoonery.

Credit then must be given to the creators of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous for finding exciting new ways to tackle the tried-and-true formula. Make no mistake, the animated Jurassic World remains head and shoulders above its big-screen counterparts; and offers perhaps the most intimate look at the reptilian baddies as seen through the eyes of young, plucky heroes Darius, Yasmina, Brook-Lynne, Kenji, Sammy, and Ben.

Sure, much of the all-new fourth season involves said heroes fleeing the clutches of Tyrannosaurus, Spinosaurus, and other ancient creatures, but each episode offers enough intrigue to keep the whole affair feeling fresh. We learn more about the mysterious Mantah Corp, come face-to-face with new threats — lots of robots! — and characters — notably the earnest and delightfully batty Dr. Turner, a scientist who enjoys her perilous job more than she has any right to — and hurdle over the plot’s numerous (and often contrived) twists and turns.

As stated, one of the best things about Camp Cretaceous is in the ways it presents its dinos. Sure, many of the sharp-toothed predators are little more than snarling, man-eating monsters whose desire for wanton destruction is often hilarious, but the series also takes the time to show the softer side of, say, a T-Rex, who, in one memorable bit, feels remorse for attacking one of its own. Despite their sharp claws and horribly wicked teeth, these dinosaurs are still just simple frightened animals protecting their territory. To its credit, the animated series drives home this particular idea much better than either Jurassic World or Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom did.

No, it doesn’t quite offer the narrative thrust (or intrigue) of previous seasons, but there’s plenty to enjoy, even if you’re only here to check out the beautifully rendered monsters.

However, at this point, the dinosaurs, chase scenes, and goofy villains are just window dressing. The meat of Camp Cretaceous, and the reason many fans continue to tune in, remains the delightfully diverse group of characters who make up the series’ core and endure plenty of life-threatening (and, in some cases, psychologically damaging) turmoil all the while evolving as individuals and as a group.

Will Kenji and Brook-Lynne hook up? Will Yasmina overcome her fears to become the hero she clearly wants to be? Will Ben ever get over Bumpy? At this point, if such questions don’t concern you, you’re probably better off skipping Camp Cretaceous Season 4 altogether. However, if you were curious to see how Kenji and Darius’ relationship would pan out after Season 3’s shocking finale, make sure to book a trip to explore this beautifully animated and endlessly entertaining lost world.

SCORED: 8/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 8 equates to “Great.” While there are a few minor issues, this score means that the art succeeds at its goal and leaves a memorable impact.
