Aaron Rodgers and Amazon Studios teaming for college football drama

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is teaming up with American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson director Anthony Hemingway and Amazon Studios for the college football drama Work Horses.

The Emmy-winning director, who also directed the 2012 war drama Red Tails, will be working on the film penned by Matthew King that gives audiences a look at the competitive but not paying world of college football, as well as working towards exposing the flaws in the system that benefits from players who are frequently struggling with making ends meet off of the field.

NFL MVPs Rodgers and Desmond Howard, who also holds a Heisman trophy and is currently an ESPN analyst, will executive produce the film alongside Ryan Rottman (Billionaire Boys Club) and Hemingway will produce the project with former LSU receiver Abram Booty and Nate Raabe.

“It is my hope that Work Horses will help shed more light on a topic I’ve been addressing on television for a dozen years,” added College Football Hall of Famer Howard. “I want to continue to be a voice for the players and fight for systemic changes.”

The project marks Amazon’s continuing investment in one of America’s most popular sports, having had multiple documentaries and streaming NFL games during the week.

“It speaks to the rigors of college athletics and the pressures and difficulties these young men face,” The Wire and Underground alum Hemingway said of the project. “I’m extremely excited to delve into this world of class, power and justice with ex-journalist Matt King as our writer.”

King, a former contributor for the now-dead newspaper The Village Voice, is currently working on the music drama Idol with Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee) set to star and produce and Netflix in negotiations for distributing the project.

Nick Nolte joins cast of The Mandalorian

Deadline has brought word that Oscar-nominated actor Nick Nolte (Warrior) has signed on to star in one of the two Star Wars series being developed for Disney+, The Mandalorian, joining Pedro Pascal (Kingsman: The Golden Circle) and Gina Carano (Deadpool).

Jon Favreau penned the series, and the directors for the show that have been officially announced include Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) who will be directing the first episode. Additional episodes will be directed by Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok). The Mandalorian will be executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist will serve as co-executive producer.

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

The 10-episode first season will reportedly have a combined budget of $100 million, making each episode worth $10 million. It has also been announced that Disney is currently developing multiple limited series featuring characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for their upcoming streaming service.

The Mandalorian does not yet have a release date but the Disney direct-to-consumer platform will launch in late 2019.

Krasinski calls A Quiet Place sequel ‘Second book in a series of books’

Nearly seven months into the writing process on the sequel to the acclaimed horror hit, writer/director John Krasinski has sat down with Business Insider to give an update on the A Quiet Place follow-up, which he says “doesn’t feel like a sequel.”

“I don’t even see it as a sequel,” Krasinski told the site. “Emily [Blunt] actually blew my mind by categorizing it the correct way after I pitched it to her. She said, ‘This isn’t a sequel at all — this is the second book in a series of books. It’s a widening of a world.’ And I thought that’s the best way to look at it. It doesn’t feel like a sequel — it’s a continuation of living in that world.”

Krasinski and Blunt sat down with Entertainment Weekly early November and discussed the development of the sequel, with Krasinski saying he originally had no interest in working on the sequel until he had an idea and fell down a rabbit hole of creativity. Now, speaking with Business Insider, Krasinski says he’s more excited than ever to be working on the film.

“I can’t wait to get in there and keep writing and see what this movie wants to allow itself to be. And that will happen in the script process and the shooting and the editing. But I think what’s cool about the second part of this movie is the same set of rules have to apply. I can’t just introduce a world where you can make a ton of sound, and if I did, there would have to be a reason for it. So it’s figuring out if there are smart and clever ways to do it.”

From Paramount Pictures, A Quiet Place opened in theaters on April 6, 2018, and grossed over $334 million worldwide on a $17 million dollar budget.

The film was directed by John Krasinski, who starred opposite his real-life wife Emily Blunt. Noah Jupe (Suburbicon, Wonder) and Millicent Simmonds (Wonderstruck) round out the cast.

In the modern horror thriller, a family of four must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. If they hear you, they hunt you. The film has minimal dialogue, because silence is survival.

A Quiet Place is produced by Michael Bay (Transformers) and his Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller (Ouija, The Purge, Texas Chainsaw Massacre), from a spec script by Bryan Woods & Scott Beck which was rewritten by Krasinski. The sequel is currently slated to hit theaters on May 15, 2020.

International character posters for Glass debut

Universal has released three new character posters for the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan thriller Glass, the third entry into the Eastrail 177 trilogy including 2000’s Unbreakable and 2016’s Split, starring Bruce Willis (Death Wish), Samuel L. Jackson (Captain Marvel) and James McAvoy (X-Men: Dark Phoenix), all of which can be viewed in full in the slideshow below (via Bloody Disgusting)!

Returning for Glass are cast members Willis as David Dunn, Jackson as Elijah Price, aka Mr. Glass, and McAvoy as Kevin Wendell Crumb, aka The Horde. They’re joined by Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story series) as a psychiatrist who specializes in “individuals who believe they are superheroes” and who is treating the trio at a mental hospital.

Also starring in the film is Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast, who reprises her role from Split. Plus Unbreakable’s Spencer Treat Clark and Charlayne Woodard, who reprise their roles as Dunn’s son and Price’s mother.

This riveting culmination of his worldwide blockbusters will be produced by Shyamalan and Blumhouse Production’s Jason Blum, who also produced the writer/director’s previous two films for Universal. They produce again with Ashwin Rajan and Marc Bienstock, and Steven Schneider, who will executive produce.

A Blinding Edge Pictures and Blumhouse production, the film will be released by Universal Pictures in North America on January 18, 2019, and by Buena Vista International abroad.

The best intentions often come back to haunt you. Mission: Impossible – Fallout finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong. Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby also join the dynamic cast.

The Mission: Impossible franchise launched in 1966 with the original CBS television series, which ran for seven seasons and 171 episodes. Mission: Impossible returned in 1988 with a rebooted series on ABC. It failed to find an audience, however, and was canceled after two seasons. It was nearly a decade later that the Tom Cruise-led Mission: Impossible feature film would turn the small screen spy series into a hugely-successful cinematic franchise.

Christopher McQuarrie, who previously helmed Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, once again wrote and directed the Paramount Pictures sequel. The film made over $791 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing entry in the franchise.

The Spy Who Came In From The Co-Op being adapted by the BBC

David Burke’s cold war novel The Spy Who Came In From The Co-Op: Melita Norwood and the Ending of Cold War Espionage is being developed into a drama series. According to Deadline, the production will be shared by The BBC, Two Cities Television, and Water and Power Productions.

Julie Gearey (Cuffs, Prisoners’ Wives) will be writing the script based on Burke’s novel. The Spy Who Came in From the Co-Op focuses on one-time British Spy Melita Norwood, who was revealed to have been working with the USSR for decades back in 1999. Given that Norwood was then 87, authorities decided she was too old to prosecute. Even though she’d helped the Soviets complete a nuclear bomb five years sooner than they would have without her. She died in 2005 at the age of 93.

This marks yet another political-oriented project for Two Cities Television, a BBC Studios-backed drama produced which was established by former President of Programming at USA Entertainment Michael Jackson and Chairman of Universal Television and President of Programming for IAC, and Wall to Wall founder Alex Graham. They are also developing a drama series based on Michael Wolff’s tell-all novel Fire and Fury, which follows Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and subsequent early days in the White House.

Colin Farrell signs on for Guy Ritchie’s Toff Guys

The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that Golden Globe-winning actor Colin Farrell (Widows) has signed on to join the ensemble crime drama Toff Guys from Guy Ritchie. He joins a cast that includes Matthew McConaughey (White Boy Rick), Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians), Hugh Grant (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), Jeremy Strong (Succession) and Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey).

Farrell, who has seen continued success in both blockbuster and indie productions of late including the 2015 black comedy The Lobster, the 2016 franchise starter Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and this year’s Widows, will portray a character named Coach, a trainer of MMA fighter. He will next be seen in the live-action remake of the Disney classic, Dumbo, which is set to hit theaters on March 29, 2019.

Toff Guys will explore the collision between old money European wealth and the modern marijuana industrial complex with new gang entrants swarming. Ritchie’s signature visual cocktail will be served with an abundance of fun. Ritchie wrote the script with Marn Davies and Ivan Atkinson.

Ritchie is currently in post-production on the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Aladdin starring Billy Magnussen, Will Smith, and Naomi Scott. His last film, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, was a costly misfire that grossed just $148 million worldwide on a $175 million budget. Still, the director’s Sherlock Holmes films were sizable hits, while his early work, namely Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels remain minor classics.

Miramax’s Bob Osher and Matthew Anderson will oversee the film in behalf of the film studion. Toff Guys’s production is currently underway in England.

An all-star collective of accomplished writers penned the screenplay, including Meg LeFauve (Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur), Nicole Perlman (First Man, Guardians of the Galaxy), Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider, upcoming Sherlock Holmes 3), Liz Flahive & Carly Mensch (Glow) and Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck.

Kevin Feige is the producer of Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jonathan Schwartz, Patty Whitcher and Stan Lee are executive producers, with Lars Winther serving as co-producer/first assistant director and David Grant serving as co-producer. Composer Pinar Toprak will be composing the score for the film.

The film will debut in theaters on March 8, 2019.

The Russo Brothers’ Netflix film Dhaka wraps in India

Netflix has announced that the upcoming feature film Dhaka has wrapped principal photography in India. Filming took place in Ahmedabad and Mumbai and will now move to Bangkok and Phuket, Thailand. Production is set to wrap in late February.

The action/adventure film is produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, who’ve directed several MCU films, including Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.

Dhaka takes place in an underworld of weapons dealers and traffickers, and follows a young boy becomes the pawn in a war between notorious drug lords. After being trapped by kidnappers inside one of the world’s most impenetrable cities, his rescue beckons the unparalleled skill of a mercenary named Tyler Rake. But Rake is a broken man with nothing to lose, harboring a death wish that makes an already deadly mission near impossible.

The cast includes Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Ragnarok), David Harbour (Stranger Things, the upcoming Hellboy), Golshifteh Farahani (Paterson) and newcomer Rudhraksh Jaiswal. The film is being produced by Netflix. Joe Russo has written the script while Sam Hargrave, known for his stunt work in multiple MCU movies as well as small roles in action films such as Atomic Blonde, will be making his directorial debut with the film.

“India has provided incredibly beautiful backdrops that have added to the intricacies of our production. The crews, production facilities and cast have been an absolute pleasure to work with,” said the Russo brothers.

There’s no official date as to when it will be available on the streaming giant’s platform. The next Russos Brothers film, the untitled fourth Avengers installment, is set to hit theaters on May 3, 2019.

Once Upon A Deadpool TV spot is full of holiday cheer

Now that the holiday season is here, it’s time we all look forward to a visit from a certain wholesome, red-clad someone. Meaning Deadpool, of course. 20th Century Fox has released a Christmas-themed TV spot for the release of the more family-friendly version of Deadpool 2, titled Once Upon a Deadpool.

Once Upon a Deadpool will contain footage from Deadpool 2, but edited down to a PG-13 format which means cutting some of the violence and language. Fans can also expect new footage “in the form of a framing sequence” in the revamped film that Ryan Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick devised for the project.

Fred Savage will reprise his role from the 1987 classic, The Princess Bride, in the new framing sequence alongside Reynold’s Deadpool. Eight scenes were filmed for the new footage in the upcoming project.

Additionally, the movie will raise money for charity. For every ticket sold, $1 will be given to F-ck Cancer.

Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 finds Ryan Reynolds reprises his role as the Merc with a Mouth alongside Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) as the luck-manipulating mutant Domino and Josh Brolin as Cable, the time-traveling son of the X-Men’s Cyclops. Jack Kesy (The Strain, Baywatch) stars as Black Tom, with Japanese actress Shioli Kutsuna and Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) playing Yukio and Firefist.

Other stars returning from the first Deadpool include Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and Stefan Kapicic as the voice of Colossus. The sequel was written by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Ryan Reynolds.

Once Upon a Deadpool charms its way into theaters December 12.

Director Joe Russo says Chris Evans ‘isn’t done yet’ with Captain America

While there have been a few clues that actor Chris Evans was hanging up his Captain America shield after the upcoming follow-up to Avengers: Infinity War, the film’s co-director Joe Russo revealed that might not be the case. In an interview with The Associated Press, Russo addressed the topic of Evans’ future with the MCU directly.

“I think it was more emotional for him than us, only because, you know, he’s not done yet. And I won’t explain what that means, but the audience will soon understand what I’m talking about,” Russo said.

He later goes on to address the fact that the still-untitled Avengers 4 is currently sitting at a three-hour runtime, and believes that it will be a while before there’s an Avengers 5 given that Disney has to integrate all of the Marvel characters currently licensed to FOX after the House of Mouse’s recent acquisition. Given that Captain America survived Thanos’s snap at the end of Infinity War, he will be playing a fundamental role in the upcoming sequel, as will the other members of the original Avengers that shared the screen for the first time back in 2012. We won’t know more until Avengers 4 hits theaters in May.

Evans, meanwhile, has joined the already star-studded cast of his upcoming murder mystery Knives Out. He’s also set to star and executive produce Defending Jacob for Apple’s forthcoming streaming service, and will appear in Neil Blomkamp’s Greenland.

Directed by Eduardo Sanchez and written by Meredith Glynn, the official synopsis for episode 14.08 reads:

Supernatural follows brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester. The thrilling and terrifying journey of the Winchester brothers continues in Supernatural‘s 13th season. Variety reports that Universal is adapting the LeBron James autobiography Shooting Stars for the big screen with Chris Robinson on board to direct. Robinson is best known for his work on the television series Star, but also has a number of music videos on his resume.

A script has already been written for the film by Joel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier, based on a previous draft written by Frank E. Flowers.

James and Maverick Carter will produce for their SpringHill Entertainment alongside Terence Winter and Rachel Winter, who will produce for Tangerine Pictures and Cold Front Productions.

Co-written by Buzz Blissinger, the book follows the Shooting Stars, a group of kids from Akron, Ohio consisting of LeBron James and his best friends. Together they formed a basketball squad they dubbed the Shooting Stars when they were just ten and eleven years old. This team quickly forged a bond and stuck together through several years of basketball, ultimately earning a national championship during their senior year of high school.

James continues his Hollywood ascension, after jumping on board as producer of the Friday the 13th reboot and New Line’s House Party remake. To say nothing of the long awaited Space Jam 2. He also serves as an executive producer on the Netflix limited series On Her Own Ground, starring Octavia Spencer.

According to Variety, The CW network plans to turn Victoria Schwab’s City of Ghosts into a one hour drama series. This falls in line with the network’s recent moves involving the novels The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter, The Lifeboat Clique, and The Picture of Dorian Gray, all of which are currently being adapted into a dramatic television series.

City of Ghosts follows college grad Cassidy who, after a near-death experience, moves to the University of Edinburgh in Scotland to study paranormal psychology. During her studies she meets Dr. Barrow who reveals her connection to the afterlife may be more powerful than she realized.

The series will be produced by Karen Wyscarver and Sanford Golden, who produced popular television hits such as Taken, NCIS: New Orleans, and Bones; and executive produced by I. Marlene King (Pretty Little Liars) and Lauren Wagner pf King’s Ling Lake Media.

AMC renews Preacher for fourth season

Preacher season 4 is happening at AMC. According to Variety, the network renewed the series based on the graphic novels by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, despite dwindling ratings, much to the delight of the show’s diehard fanbase.

“’Preacher’ is a show unlike any other on television,” said David Madden, president of programming of entertainment networks for AMC Networks. “A passionate base of fans found their way to Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy and have followed along with their adventures, at times indescribable adventures, for three seasons. We are thankful to our partners at Sony and to Seth, Evan and Sam for everything they have brought to this series, which we are pleased to renew for a fourth season. Like the superfans of Preacher, we can’t wait to see where this journey leads next.”

In Preacher Season 3, Jesse Custer’s quest for God takes him back to the place he’s been avoiding his whole life: home. Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy return to Angelville, the Louisiana Plantation where Jesse was raised, and find old grudges and deadly obligations await them. With the help of his friends — and a few enemies — Jesse will need to escape his past… because the future of the world depends on it.

Preacher stars Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga, Joseph Gilgun, Ian Coletti, Graham McTavish, Pip Torrens, Julie Ann Emery, Malcolm Barrett and new series regulars Betty Buckley (Supergirl, Split) and Colin Cunningham (Blood Drive, Falling Skies). Jeremy Childs (The Last Castle, Nashville), Liz McGreever (Star, Nashville), Jonny Coyne (Turn, Alcatraz), Adam Croasdell (Reign) and Prema Cruz (Mozart in the Jungle) are recurring guest stars.

The Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production was developed for television by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Sausage Party, This is the End, Superbad) and showrunner Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad). The series is executive produced by Catlin, as well as Rogen, Goldberg and James Weaver for Point Grey Pictures, Neal H. Moritz and Ori Marmur for Original Film and Vivian Cannon, Jason Netter, Michael Slovis, Mark McNair and Ken F. Levin.

Ahead of the release of James Wan’s underwater superhero epic, Aquaman, the film has an all-new poster for Chinese audiences. Additionally, Vital Thrills got a look at the Chinese trailer. While both are similar to the marketing we’ve seen for the film stateside, the trailer has added a few scenes from Atlantis, highlighting the imaginative world Wan has helped to create. You see both of them in the post below.

From Warner Bros. Pictures comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas. The film, starring Momoa (Justice League, Game of Thrones) in the title role, reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime — one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be… a king.

Aquaman also stars Amber Heard (Justice League, Magic Mike XXL) as Mera, a fierce warrior and Aquaman’s ally throughout his journey; Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (Platoon, Spider-Man 2) as Vulko, counsel to the Atlantean throne; Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring films, Watchmen) as Orm/Ocean Master, the present King of Atlantis; Dolph Lundgren (The Expendables films) as Nereus, King of the Atlantean tribe Xebel; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Baywatch, The Get Down) as the vengeful Black Manta; and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman (The Hours, Lion) as Arthur’s mom, Atlanna. Directed by Wan from a script by Will Beall (Gangster Squad) and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2), from the story by Geoff Johns, Wan and Beall, the film is being produced by Peter Safran and Rob Cowan, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Rob Cowan, Jon Berg, Walter Hamada, and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. The movie is based on characters from DC’s Aquaman created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger. Rupert Gregson-Williams (Wonder Woman) will compose the music.

Aquaman opens on December 21 in theaters everywhere.

Jessica Rothe leads the returning cast of Happy Death Day 2U, the follow-up to Blumhouse’s (Split, Get Out, The Purge series) surprise 2017 smash hit of riveting, repeating twists and comic turns. This time, our hero Tree (Rothe) discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead. Jason Blum once again produces and Christopher Landon returns to write and direct this next chapter, while Happy Death Day executive producers Angela Mancuso and John Baldecchi are newly joined by EP Samson Mucke (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse).

The CW drops 20 new photos from the Elseworlds crossover

In just a few days, The CW’s annual Arrowverse crossover event will begin. The crossover, titled Elseworlds, will take place across episodes of The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl. In anticipation, the network has just released 20 new photos from the three-night event, featuring some reality-bending hijinks involving Barry Allen and Oliver Queen, Superman in an all-black suit, and more. The crossover event stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers/Supergirl, Grant Gustin as Barry Allen/The Flash along with guest stars Ruby Rose as Kate Kane/Batwoman, Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent/Superman, Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane, Jeremy Davies as Dr. John Deegan, Bob Frazer as Roger Hayden/Psycho Pirate and Cassandra Jean Amell as Nora Fries, the wife of the classic DC comics villain Mr. Freeze.

This story will also mark Ruby Rose’s debut as Kate Kane, a.k.a. Batwoman. While Kate is Bruce Wayne’s cousin in the DC Universe, the Batman isn’t expected to appear in this story or anywhere else in the Arrowverse any time soon. That said, Batman does exist in this world, and his absence will play a role in the storyline. Possibly explaining why Oliver Queen calling him out by name last season on Arrow.
