The Angry Birds Movie cast today offered a special “Sneak Beak” at the May 20 release
The Sony Pictures lot in Culver City, California was host this week to a special “sneak beak” at the upcoming animated adventure, The Angry Birds Movie. Based on the hugely successful Rovio game franchise that has seen more than three billion downloads, The Angry Birds Movie arrives from the directing team of Clay Katis and Fergal Reily. The former is a 19-year Disney Animation vet who has worked on recent hits like Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen, while the latter has been with Sony for more than a decade, working as a storyboard artist on films like Spider-Man 2 and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Add to the mix screenwriter Jon Vitti, best known for his work on shows like The Simpsons, King of the Hill and you’ve got an interesting blend of comedy talent even before getting to The Angry Birds Movie cast.
The Angry Birds Movie cast is led by comedy talents Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride and Bill Hader, all of whom joined producer John Cohen on stage for a behind-the-scenes look at the new film. Read on to learn about the world of the film and check out a video Q&A with the Angry Birds Movie cast in the player at the bottom of this page.
The story of the film begins on Bird Island, an idyllic land where flightless birds leave peaceably and spent most of their time relaxing, eating worms and looking after their eggs. That is, except for Red (Sudeikis). He can’t help being angry all the time and it’s not long before a rage-fueled episode sends him to anger management class. There, Red meets fellow Angry Birds Chuck (Gad) and Bomb (McBride). Chuck moves at a mile a minute and Bomb has a rather unusual character trait: When he gets too upset, he literally explodes!
Life on Bird Island is turned upside down one day with the arrival of a Pig pirate ship, captained by Leonard (Hader). At first, the pigs seem to be peaceful and promise to introduce the birds to their advanced technology (TNT and a slingshot used for transportation), but it’s not long before the pigs betray the birds and steal all of their eggs. Hoping to find a solution, Red, Chuck and Bomb go in search of the legendary Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage), a great hero who is said to live in the mountains high above the bird city. Unfortunately, Great Eagle hasn’t been heard from in two decades and the bird that Red and company track down isn’t exactly a great savior. He’s out of shape and a bit senile.
With no one else to turn it, it’s up to Red to teach an entire civilization how to get angry. Making use of the technology that the pigs brought, Red begins an attack on Piggy Island’s bizarre city design with attack sequences straight out of the Angry Birds games.
Also showcased in the footage previewed at the event were characters voiced by Maya Rudolph and by Keegan-Michael Key. Rudolph is Matilda, a hippie-ish anger management teacher that was a former angry bird herself before becoming a “Free Rage Chicken.” Key, meanwhile, plays a bird judge that sentences Red to the course. Although quite diminutive, the judge character hides his size by standing on another bird underneath his robe.
The Angry Birds Movie cast also includes Kate McKinnon, Tony Hale, Ike Barinholtz and Tituss Burgess. Catch the film in theaters May 30 and check back between now and then for further updates on the world of The Angry Birds Movie.
