
The Magnificent Seven rides to first place at the box office
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven easily topped the box office this weekend with an estimated $35 million from 3,674 theaters, an average of $9,526 per theater. $2.9 million of that figure came from 372 domestic IMAX locations, while the film earned $4.3 million from 606 IMAX locations worldwide. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, The Magnificent Seven received an A- CinemaScore from audiences. Made for $90 million, the modern remake of the western classic stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennett, Matt Bomer and Peter Sarsgaard.
Landing in second place was Warner Bros.’ animated adventure Storks, which grossed $21.8 million from 3,922 theaters, an average of $5,560. The film also opened in 33 international markets this weekend where it earned $18.3 million for a global weekend of $40.1 million. The $70 million film features the voices of Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammer, Katie Crown, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Danny Trejo, Ty Burrell and Jennifer Aniston. It received an A- CinemaScore from audiences.
Dropping two spots to third, Warner Bros.’ Sully added $13.8 million its third weekend to push its domestic total to $92.4 million. Overseas, Sully grossed $6.5 million from 45 territories for an international total of $34.5 million and worldwide sum of $126.9 million. Made for $60 million, the Clint Eastwood-directed film stars Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney.
In fourth place, Bridget Jones’s Baby (Universal) earned $4.5 million its second weekend to push its domestic total to $16.5 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $67.1 million for a worldwide sum of $83.6 million. The Sharon Maguire-directed Bridget Jones’s Baby stars Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey, Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones, and Emma Thompson. It was made for $35 million.
Oliver Stone’s Snowden (Open Road Films), starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, rounded out the top five with $4.1 million its second weekend. Made for $40 million, Snowden has earned $15.1 million. The film also stars Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Scott Eastwood, Logan Marshall-Green, Timothy Olyphant, Ben Schnetzer, LaKeith Lee Stanfield, Rhys Ifans and Nicolas Cage.
In limited release, Walt Disney Pictures’ Queen of Katwe made $305,000 from 52 locations, an average of $5,865 per location. Directed by Mira Nair, the film received an A+ CinemaScore and stars David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong’o, and Madina Nalwanga. It will expand domestically next weekend.
