50 Shaders Darker, Early Women Filmmakers, The Accidental Tourist, Serial Mom and more hit Blu-ray and DVD this week
There’s a great variety of titles hitting Blu-ray and DVD this week with 50 Shades Darker leading the charge. While May 9 represents a quieter week than most for recent big screen releases, there are plenty of other interesting titles that should please all sorts of viewer.
A new, director-supervised 4K transfer of Michael Mann’s Heat kicks of this week’s catalogue titles. Warner Archive delivers a pair of HD upgrades with Lawrence Kasdan’s 1988 take on Anne Tyler’s The Accidental Tourist and 1965’s offbeat Terry Southern adaptation, The Loved One.
The Criterion Collection this week upgrades Chantal Akerman’s 1975 arthouse classic Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. That makes a great pairing with the latest from Flicker Alley, a six-disc (including both DVD and Blu-ray) of Early Women Filmmakers, offering 25 films from female directors in the first half of the 20th century.
Shout! Factory brings John Waters to Blu-ray with a new special edition of Serial Mom. There’s also a new Blu-ray edition of Gus Van Sant’s 1998 Psycho remake and the Simon Pegg comedy A Fantastic Fear of Everything.
Small screen titles hitting Blu-ray and DVD May 9 include the first season of the HBO comedy drama Divorce and the fourth season of Netflix‘s Orange Is the New Black. Hitting DVD only is the first season of the Australian series Rake and the fourth season of Comedy Central‘s Inside Amy Schumer. If classic television is more your style, check out massive complete set releases for both Mannix and Streets of San Francisco on DVD this week.
Digital HD titles arriving this week include Jordan Peele’s hit horror tale Get Out and the recent big screen releases Great Wall and Railroad Tigers. Then there’s a double feature of canine adventures, with both the animated Rock Dog and the bizarre franchise sequel Max 2: White House Hero.
