20th Century Fox pushes back X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants

20th Century Fox announced today it has pushed back the upcoming X-Men movies, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants, and the studio has changed the release dates for five other films as well.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which was originally going to hit theaters on November 2, 2018, will now open on February 14, 2019. Picking up ten years after X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: Dark Phoenix finds the X-Men in a place they’ve never been before: National heroes! The team embarks on a routine mission into space where things quickly take a turn and they find themselves in a battle with an intergalactic force over team member Jean Grey. Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, the film stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, Lamar Johnson, and Sophie Turner.

Josh Boone’s The New Mutants has been pushed back a second time. It was originally scheduled to open on April 13, 2018, was then moved back to February 22, 2019, and has now been pushed all the way back to August 2, 2019. The cast for The New Mutants includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga, and Alice Braga. Taylor-Joy previously confirmed that a new character will be added in reshoots.

The Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody has been moved up from December 25, 2018 to X-Men: Dark Phoenix‘s previous date of November 2, 2018. Late last year, Eddie the Eagle director Dexter Fletcher replaced Bryan Singer on the film, which stars Rami Malek, Joe Mazzello, Ben Hardy, and Gwilym Lee.

Next up, 20th Century Fox has pushed back writer/director Joe Cornish’s The Kid Who Would be King slightly from February 14, 2019 to March 1, 2019. The film tells the story of Alex, a twelve-year-old British schoolboy whose everyday problems are dwarfed by his discovery of the mythical sword Excalibur. Now, with the most powerful sword in history in the hands of the most powerless schoolboy in Britain, an epic adventure begins as Alex and his friends must thwart a medieval villain named Morgana, who is hell-bent on destroying the world. Louis Serkis, Dean Chaumoo, Tom Taylor, Rhianna Doris, Angus Imrie, Rebecca Ferguson, and Sir Patrick Stewart star.

Previously set for a March 1, 2019 release date was The Force, but that movie is now looking for a new release date. James Mangold directs the film, based on the Don Winslow novel.

Fox has also announced that director Roxann Dawson’s faith-based movie Breakthrough, starring Chrissy Metz and Topher Grace, will open in theaters on April 12, 2019.

And finally, Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios’ Spies in Disguise has been moved from January 18, 2019 to April 19, 2019. Will Smith and Tom Holland will voice the animated buddy comedy. Nick Bruno and Troy Quane co-direct the feature.
