Warner Bros. announces release dates for The Witches and Doctor Sleep

Warner Bros. announced a whole batch of release dates, including two high profile films — Robert Zemeckis’ The Witches remake, which will open October 16, 2020, and The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep, which has jumped from its original January 24, 2020 release to the more promising slot of November 8 of this year. Doctor Sleep will compete against the animated Sonic the Hedgehog, the prequel Kingsman: The Great Game and the WWII epic Midway. The Witches will be released alongside an Untitled Blumhouse horror film and Hasbro’s Micronauts.

Based on the 1983 novel by Roald Dahl, and starring Anne HathawayThe Witches tells the story of a brave young boy and his Norwegian grandmother as they battle England’s witches, but this is not a fairy-tale. This is about REAL WITCHES. Real witches don’t ride around on broomsticks. They don’t even wear black cloaks and hats. They are vile, cunning, detestable creatures who disguise themselves as nice, ordinary ladies. So how can you tell when you’re face to face with one? Well, if you don’t know yet you’d better find out quickly-because there’s nothing a witch loathes quite as much as children.

The Witches was previously adapted into a film in 1990 from director Nicolas Roeg and starring Anjelica Huston, Jasen Fisher, Mai Zetterling and Rowan Atkinson.

Doctor Sleep is set to be directed and written by Mike Flanagan, making it his second King adaptation after the acclaimed Gerald’s Game. Warner Bros. will release the movie on January 24, 2020. His producing partner, Trevor Macy, is set to produce along with Jon Berg for Vertigo Entertainment.

The sequel stars Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin) as adult Danny Torrance , Rebecca Ferguson (Mission Impossible – Fallout) as Rose the Hat, Zahn McClarnon (Westworld) as Crow Daddy, Carl Lumbly (Supergirl) as Dick Hallorann, Kyliegh Curran (I Can I Will I Did) as Abra Stone, Bruce Greenwood (Gerald’s Game) as Dr. John Dalton, Alex Essoe (Midnighters) as Wendy Torrance, Emily Alyn Lind as Snakebite Andi, Jocelin Donahue (Insidious: Chapter 2), Jacob Tremblay (Room) and Zackary Momoh.

Published 36 years after The ShiningDoctor Sleep follows an adult Danny Torrance (McGregor) from the original novel. Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.” There Dan meets Abra Stone (Curran), and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival.
