Scooby-Doo Enlists the voices of Will Forte, Gina Rodriguez & Tracy Morgan

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Will Forte (Last Man On Earth), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Tracy Morgan (30 Rock) and the man himself Frank Welker have landed the lead roles in Tony Cervone’s Scooby Doo. Talk of an animated Scooby-Doo film has bounced around for some time now, but it looks like Warner Bros. and its Warner Animation Group are finally taking a huge step to make it happen.

This time Rodriguez will play Velma, Forte will play Shaggy and Morgan will voice, um, Captain Caveman … a character that exists outside of Scooby-Doo as part of the Hanna-Barbara universe. Does this mean we are getting “Scooby-Doo: Into the Scooby-verse?” Well, according to the report, the film will see “the Mystery Inc. gang join forces with other heroes of the Hanna-Barbera universe to save the world from Dick Dastardly and his evil plans.” So, kind of.

In related news, actor Matthew Lillard -who has played Shaggy Rogers in the two live-action Scooby-Doo films and voiced the character in two animated series (Mystery Incorporated and Be Cool Scooby-Doo!), every direct-to-video film since 2010, and even the 2018 crossover episode of Supernatural– has expressed his displeasure at not only being replaced by Forte but finding out in the press along with everyone else…

Rodriguez was last seen in the auctioneer Miss Bala, but currently lends her voice to the Netflix animated series Carmen Sandiego. Forte voiced Abraham Lincoln in both Lego Movies, but also drew critical acclaim for his role as Phil on The Last Man on Earth (among other notable accomplishments). Morgan was last seen in What Men Want, but has similarly lent his voice for The Simpsons and the acclaimed video game Goregasm: The Legend of Dong Slayer.

Welker obviously needs no introduction thanks to a ridiculous resume that includes voice acting gigs in Transformers, Futurama, Toy Story, Aladdin and Batman: The Animated Series, among others. He played the voice of Fred in the original Scooby-Doo cartoon from 1969-70, and the titular canine in the many iterations of the show over the years.

The project, produced by Chris Columbus, Charles Roven and Allison Abbate, will bring back those pesky kids and their pal Scooby, all of whom were last seen on the big screen in 2004’s live action misfire Scooby-Doo 2: Monster’s Unleashed.

Scooby-Doo is expected to hit theaters in May of 2020.
