Designated Survivor Cancelled For A Second Time

After surviving the axe from ABC following its sophomore season, Netflix saved the Kiefer Sutherland-led political drama Designated Survivor for a third season, but unfortunately for fans, the streaming service has cancelled the series for the second time, according to TVLine.

“We are proud to have offered fans a third season of Designated Survivor, and will continue to carry all three seasons for years to come,” a statement from Netflix read. “We’re especially thankful to star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland, who brought passion, dedication and unforgettable performance as President Kirkman. We’re also grateful to showrunner/executive producer Neal Bear for his guiding vision and steady hand, creator/executive producer David Guggenheim and EPs Mark Gordon, Suzan Bymel, Simon Kinberg, Aditya Sood, and Peter Noah along with the cast and crew who crafted a compelling and satisfying final season.”

Designated Survivor follows Sutherland’s President Kirkman after he was thrust into the role by a devastating terrorist attack. According to Netflix, the new season will resume with Kirkman preparing to fight for reelection. “Campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance, and fake news” will all be among the topics explored in season 3. And because every show needs a touch of melodrama, the description also said that “democracy, as we know it, will hang in the balance.”

“The continuation of the show via Netflix is a win-win for all involved,” said executive producer Mark Gordon in a statement. “The story of President Kirkman and those around him has not been fully told and we look forward to working with our new partner in continuing the show for a global audience.”
