Angel Has Fallen Leads Sleepy Labor Day Weekend Box Office
Lionsgate and Millennium’s Angel Has Fallen maintained the #1 spot at the domestic box office, leading a very low Labor Day weekend crowd. The sequel brought in an estimated $14.8 million through the four day holiday weekend and giving it a US total of $43.9 million. International numbers for the film have not yet been released.
Universal Pictures’ Good Boys held onto second place and brought in $12.1 million over the weekend, an increase of 4% from its previous weekend haul. Overall the comedy now sits at $59 million domestic, putting it on track to pass Fox’s final X-Men movie Dark Phoenix likely within the week. Should the film’s steady box office hold, which has already made it a success story for the studio, it could also pass the likes of Yesterday and Annabelle Comes Home very soon. Internationally the Jacob Tremblay lead comedy has brought in $11 million, giving it a global total of $70 million.
Walt Disney Pictures’ The Lion King leaped up to third place, bringing in $9.32 million for a US total of $523.5 million. Internationally the photo-realistic reimagining brought in $20.6 million for an international total of $1.041 billion and a worldwide total of $1.562 billion. The film is now the #7 highest grossing movie of all time, passing Marvel’s The Avengers.
Universal’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw moved up to #4 with an $8.2 million domestic haul for the holiday weekend, the spin-off’s US total now sits at $159 million. Internationally the film brought in $39.1 million for an international total of $525.3 million and a global total of $684.2 million. Without adjusting for inflation, the film has now surpassed Fast Five to become the fourth highest grossing movie in the franchise.
The faith based film Overcomer slipped into fifth place with $7.775 million, adding more screens to its nationwide total for 1800+, giving it a US total of $19.32 million. Hailing from the filmmakers behind War Room, Courageous, and Fireproof, and produced on a reported budget of $5 million, the film is a modest hit for the summer.
