Best New Spooky Series to Stream

The Haunting of Bly Manor 

Mike Flanagan’s follow-up to The Haunting of Hill House — also a must-watch — on Netflix is inspired by the works of Henry James. After an au pair’s tragic death, Henry Wingrave (Henry Thomas) hires a young American nanny, Dani (Victoria Pedretti), to care for his orphaned niece (Amelie Bea Smith) and nephew (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) who reside at Bly Manor with the chef Owen (Rahul Kohli), groundskeeper Jamie (Amelia Eve), and housekeeper Mrs. Grose (T’Nia Miller).

Lovecraft Country 

Following the season finale of Misha Green’s fantasy horror drama, the entire first season is available now to stream on HBO Max. Based on author Matt Ruff’s novel of the same name, Lovecraft Country follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.

Monsterland

Based on the short stories from Nathan Ballingrud’s North American Lake Monsters, the series is a horror anthology which follows the story of broken people driven to desperate acts in an attempt to repair their lives, featuring encounters with mermaids, fallen angels, and a variety of other mythical creatures and horrors. Monsterland stars Kaitlyn Dever, Taylor Schilling, Mike Colter, Kelly Marie Tran, Jonathan Tucker, and more.

Truth Seekers

Set in a mysterious world filled with dread and just-out-of-sight monsters, Truth Seekers mixes the very funny with the very scary in an exciting take on genre storytelling. The eight-episode supernatural comedy series co-created by and starring Nick Frost and Simon Pegg follows a team of part-time paranormal investigators who team up to uncover and film ghost sightings across the UK, sharing their adventures on an online channel for all to see. However, as they stake out haunted churches, underground bunkers, and abandoned hospitals with their array of homemade ghost-detecting gizmos, their supernatural experiences grow more frequent, more terrifying, and even deadly, as they begin to uncover a conspiracy that could bring about Armageddon for the entire human race.

Evil Season 1 – Now Streaming on Netflix

CBS’ horror crime drama series began streaming its first season on Netflix earlier this month. Evil is a psychological mystery series about the battle between science and religion. It focuses on Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), a skeptical female clinical psychologist who joins David Acosta (Mike Colter), a Catholic priest-in-training, and a blue-collar contractor as they investigate supposed miracles, demonic possessions, and other extraordinary occurrences to see if there’s a scientific explanation or if something truly supernatural is at work.

Mr. Mercedes Seasons 1 & 2 – Now Streaming on Peacock

Based on Stephen King’s bestselling Bill Hodges novel trilogy, the first two seasons of the series, which originally aired on Audience Network, moved to Peacock this month. Mr. Mercedes follows a retired detective, Bill Hodges (Brendan Gleeson), who is tormented by a serial killer, Brady Hartsfield aka Mr. Mercedes (Harry Treadaway), through a series of letters and e-mails, causing him to set out on a dangerous and potentially felonious crusade to protect his loved ones and himself.

Scare Me

In the film written and directed by Josh Ruben, Fred (Ruben), a frustrated copywriter, checks into a winter cabin to start his first novel. The Witches

Spooky Events to Stream

Blumhouse is hosting its first-ever virtual event BlumFest where horror fans can get a sneak preview of the studio’s upcoming movie and TV projects. BlumFest 2020 will be consisting of virtual panels, sneak previews, updates, and news announcements which will be hosted and moderated by Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley. The event will feature appearances from the cast and filmmakers of Welcome to the BlumhouseThe Craft: LegacyFreakyHalloween Kills, and The Good Lord Bird. Fans should also anticipate several surprise guests who will share exclusive news about Blumhouse’s unannounced projects. The virtual event will be taking place this Thursday, October 29 at 10:00 a.m. PT on Blumhouse’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.

Rakuten Viki, the largest streaming service for Asian content, is hosting a Halloween Movie Night watch party for Rampant, a Korean thriller about the spread of a zombie plague, on October 31 at 7:00 p.m. PT. Be sure to also check out their “Spooki Viki” Halloween collection, consisting of over 40 Asian horror titles, including Train to Busan, Tale of the Nine-Tailed, Search, Hotel Del Luna, and much more!

BroadwayHD, the streaming platform for theater fans, is debuting Night of the Living Dead Live!, the stage version of the original George A. Romero 1968 film, on October 29. One of the most iconic and influential releases of all time, Night of the Living Dead Live! skirts the line between the horrific and the hysterical, as it makes its London debut. The production, written by Christopher Bond, Dale Boyer, and Trevor Martin, follows the eerie story of a bunch of strangers holed up in a farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania.
