The Book of Boba Fett Primer: What Is the Darksaber?

The latest installment of The Book of Boba Fett completely changed the tune seen so far. The Bryce Dallas Howard-directed episode put on hold Boba Fett’s takeover of Tatooine’s criminal underworld for a while and followed what happened to a fellow Mandalorian. On top of that, the episode also featured the return of a legendary black-bladed lightsaber, the Darksaber.

Look Who’s Back

The freshly-released “Return of the Mandalorian” episode spotlighted the protagonist of The Mandalorian series, Din Djarin, a.k.a. Mando. In the Season 2 finale aftermath, Djarin is back at collecting bounties. His new job involves finding and capturing Kaba Baiz, a very stubborn Klatooinian. Things go the wrong way, and Djarin has to bring Baiz in “cold,” so he uses the Darksaber to dispose of the Klatooinian and his henchmen. After collecting his new bounty, Djarin visits the Armorer, where he meets Paz Vizsla. Djarin tells his fellow Mandalorian what happened to Grogu and how he came into possession of the Darksaber.

The Armorer explains to Djarin that the importance of the Darksaber comes from the fact that it legitimizes the ruler of Mandalore. She then says that whoever wants to properly claim possession of the weapon must first defeat Mando. Despite his efforts to master it, Djarin still struggles to wield the blade, and Vizsla challenges him. Mando defeats his challenger with ease and keeps the lightsaber. He then confesses to the Armorer that he broke the rules of the Mandalorian creed and leaves, taking the blade with him on Tatooine.

What Is the Darksaber?

In the Star Wars mythology, the Darksaber was created by Tarre Vizsla, the very first Mandalorian to become Force-sensitive and join the Jedi Order. Vizsla lived a thousand years before the events of The Book of Boba Fett. Its characteristics are pretty unique. While it can’t cut through the legendary Mandalore metal beskar, it is super effective against pretty much everything else. Plus, the wielder’s thoughts, will, and actions can influence the power of the weapon. Following Vizsla’s death, his family members stole the blade from the Jedi Temple and hid it for generations. It reappeared during the Clone Wars, where Pre Vizsla used it to take over the throne of Mandalore.

The legendary weapon has made several appearances in the Star War animated series. Fans of The Clone Wars and Rebels have already seen characters like Pre Vizsla and Maul wielding it across never-ending battles between Jedi and Sith. However, its first live-action appearance dates back to the end of The Mandalorian freshman season. On that occasion, Moff Gideon used it to make his way out of the wreckage of his TIE fighter.

The weapon invented by Tarre Vizsla played a much more prominent role in The Mandalorian season 2. In the season finale, Mando defeated Gideon in single combat and earned the Darksaber. At the same time, Bo-Katan Kryze was looking to recover the Darksaber from the Imperial officer. Bo-Katan had the lightsaber for a while when she ruled Mandalore, however, she never won it in battle but it was only given to her. During Djarin’s clash with Gideon, Mando disarmed and defeated his opponent in single combat. Thanks to the victory, Mando rightfully claimed the legendary black-bladed lightsaber. Since it is deeply linked with the rulers of Mandalore, Djarin might have claimed more than a weapon.
