The upcoming Road House remake has gone through a seemingly tumultuous production, and according to a recent report from Puck’s Matt Belloni, several people behind the scenes are not happy the film won’t be released in theaters.

According to Belloni’s latest newsletter entry, former producer Joel Silver, director Doug Liman, and Ari Emanuel — the CEO of WME, the agency that star Jake Gyllenhaal is signed with — were “pissed” that Amazon Studios chose to release the film on its Prime Video streaming platform.

The report goes on to mention that the group was so angry at Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke that Emanuel convinced Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to screen the film himself on his yacht. The goal, according to the report, was to hope that Bezos loved the movie so much that he pushed for it to get a theatrical release himself. Unfortunately, the report notes that Salke didn’t change her mind, and the film will still be getting a streaming release instead.

According to a separate from Variety, Road House is one of director Liman’s “highest-testing films” in his career, per insiders.

What is the Road House remake about?

“The new take follows a former UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys but soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise,” reads the synopsis.

The Road House remake is directed by The Bourne Identity filmmaker Doug Liman from a screenplay written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. Joining Gyllenhaal are UFC star Conor McGregor, The Suicide Squad breakout Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen (Game Night), Gbemisola Ikumelo (The Last Tree), Lukas Gage (The White Lotus), Hannah Love Lanier (A Black Lady Sketch Show), Travis Van Winkle (Accepted), B.K. Cannon (Switched at Birth), Arturo Castro (Broad City), Dominique Columbus (Ray Donovan), Beau Knapp (Southpaw), and Bob Menery.

The Road House remake is executive produced by JJ Hook, Alison Winter, and Aaron Auch, with Joel Silver producing for Silver Pictures. As part of its production, Gyllenhaal was seen filming at the UFC 285 event, including the weigh-in segments, and staging a fight in the octagon with former UFC fighter Jay Hieron.
