Deadpool reaches $492 million at the worldwide box office

20th Century Fox‘s Deadpool movie dominated the worldwide box office for a second-straight weekend, bringing in another $55 million domestically for a North American total of $235.4 million. That means that Deadpool has already passed up X-Men: Days of Future Past‘s $233.9 million domestic total in just 10 days. Overseas, Deadpool earned $85 million its second weekend for an international total of $256.5 million and an impressive worldwide box office total of $491.9 million! The comic book adaptation is well on its way to becoming the top R-rated title ever at the global box office, a record that is still held by 2003’s The Matrix Reloaded with $742.1 million. 

Deadpool, made for only $58 million, stars Ryan Reynolds as the title character alongside T.J. Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Morena Baccarin as Copycat, and Ed Skrein as Ajax. The film, directed by Tim Miller and written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, also features the mutant Colossus, voiced by Serbian actor Stefan Kapicic.

20th Century Fox also held onto the second spot domestically with DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 3 adding $12.5 million its fourth weekend for a domestic total of $117.1 million. Kung Fu Panda 3 features the voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, James Hong, Randall Duk Kim, Bryan Cranston, J.K. Simmons and Kate Hudson.

Out of the newcomers, Sony Pictures’ Risen performed best in third place at the domestic box office with an estimated $11.8 million from 2,915 theaters, an average of $4,048 per theater. Directed by Kevin Reynolds, the movie stars Joseph Fiennes, Tom Felton, Peter Firth and Cliff Curtis. It cost just $20 million to make and received an A- CinemaScore from audiences.

The fourth spot belonged to A24 release The Witch, written and directed by Robert Eggers and starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw, Ellie Grainger and Lucas Dawson. The movie grossed an estimated $8.7 million on 2,046 screens, an average of $4,245 per theater. The opening is the best single weekend for A24. While critics praised the movie, audiences only gave the film a C- CinemaScore.

Rounding out the top five was New Line and MGM’s How to be Single, starring Dakota Johnson and Rebel Wilson. The film earned $8.2 million its second weekend for a two-week total of $31.8 million. The R-rated comedy cost $38 million to make and has made $55.9 million at the worldwide box office.

Also opening this weekend was Focus Features’ Race, which received an A CinemaScore and debuted in the sixth spot with $7.3 million from 2,369 theaters, an average of $3,071. Directed by Stephen Hopkins, the Jesse Owens biopic stars Stephan James, Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons, Carice van Houten, Shanice Banton and William Hurt.

Dropping three spots to seventh it second weekend, Ben Stiller’s Zoolander 2 added $5.5 million for a total of $23.7 million. Overseas, the sequel earned $4.8 million for a worldwide box office total of $40.8 million.

In its 10 weekend in theaters, Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned $3.8 million domestically and $2.6 million internationally for a global total of $6.4 million. The J.J. Abrams-directed film has now earned $921.6 million domestically and $1.118 billion internationally for a worldwide box office total of $2.039 billion. It is the #1 movie of all-time domestically, the fourth movie of all-time internationally, and the No. 3 movie of all-time worldwide.

While Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia doesn’t open in North American theaters until March 4, the animated film is already a hit overseas. The film, featuring the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, added $31.2 million this weekend from 22 territories for an overseas total of $39 million.
