Benedict Wong Teases Changes to his Doctor Strange Character

We already know about some changes that have been made to the world of Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme for the upcoming Doctor Strange movie, a given since Tilda Swinton was originally cast as The Ancient One; and ow more details have come up about what to expect as far as differences in the film and the source material, this time about another of the good doctor’s allies.

Speaking with Den of Geek, actor Benedict Wong (The Martian) revealed that his version of the character Wong will be pretty different in the feature film.

“I’m certainly not going to be the tea-making manservant. We’re heading in a different direction,” the actor says. “There isn’t any martial arts for Wong in Doctor Strange actually, he’s more of a drill sergeant to Kamar-Taj. He’s one of the masters of sorcery.”

Doctor Strange also stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme along with Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as Baron Mordo, Tilda Swinton (Only Lovers Left Alive) as The Ancient One and, in undisclosed roles, Rachel McAdams (The Vow), Michael Stuhlbarg (Pawn Sacrifice), Scott Adkins (The Bourne Ultimatum), Amy Landecker (“Transparent”), and Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal”).

The film is directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily RoseDeliver Us From Evil) from a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Passengers) and C. Robert Cargill (Sinister). Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

Doctor Strange opens in theaters on Friday, November 4, 2016.
