DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls gets China release before the U.S.
DreamWorks Animation‘s upcoming feature film Trolls has officially been granted a China release date on October 28, 2016. The film, which bows in the U.S. on November 4, will be distributed locally in China by DreamWorks Animation’s joint venture Oriental DreamWorks.
“China has long been an incredibly important and fiercely loyal market for DreamWorks Animation and we’re thrilled to able to open Trolls on a perfect date in the thick of our global rollout,” said DreamWorks Animation’s Co-Presidents of Feature Animation Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria. “Oriental DreamWorks continues to be an invaluable partner to us, exemplified by the record-breaking opening for Kung Fu Panda 3 in China and we look forward to continuing that partnership momentum with Trolls in October.”
“Trolls combines amazing artistry and humor with a universal theme of happiness that will resonate with Chinese audiences and we cannot wait to share this story with our fans,” said Oriental DreamWorks’ Head of Studio and Chief Creative Officer Melissa Cobb. “As distributors, we feel that we have a fantastic release date, which perfectly positions us for continued success in the marketplace.”
Leading the cast is nine-time Grammy and four-time Emmy Award winner Justin Timberlake (The Social Network, Inside Llewyn Davis) as the troll Branch, in addition to serving as executive music producer and performing multiple songs on the soundtrack. The film also features Academy and Tony Award nominee Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect, Up in the Air) as Princess Poppy, The Late Late Show host James Corden (Into the Woods) as Biggie, comedian Russell Brand (Get Him to the Greek) as Creek, music superstar Gwen Stefani (The Aviator) as DJ Suki, YouTube personality GloZell Green as Grandma Rosiepuff, Kunal Nayyar (The Big Bang Theory) as Guy Diamond, comedian Ron Funches (Undateable) as Cooper, YouTube personality Meg DeAngelis as Moxie and Swedish electropop duo Icona Pop (Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo) as the Fashionistas.
From the creators of Shrek comes DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls, a smart, funny and irreverent comedy about the search for happiness, and just how far some will go to get it. This hilarious film transports audiences to a colorful, wondrous world populated by the overly optimistic Trolls, who have a constant dance in their step and a song on their lips, and the comically pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their stomachs.
After the Bergens invade Troll Village, Poppy (Kendrick), the happiest Troll ever born, and the overly-cautious curmudgeonly Branch (Timberlake) set off on a journey to rescue her friends. Together, this mismatched duo embarks on a rescue mission full of adventure and mishaps – trying to tolerate each other long enough to get the job done.
Trolls was directed by Mike Mitchell (Shrek Forever After), co-directed by Walt Dohrn (Shrek Forever After) and produced by Gina Shay (Shrek Forever After).
