True to the game, the hard-R Mortal Kombat movie will have fatalities
With news of yet another Mortal Kombat movie in the works, some fans wondered just how true to its pixelated roots the big screen adventure would go. The answer, according to screenwriter Greg Russo, is very.
As pointed out by our sister site PlayStation Lifestyle, the screenwriter took to Twitter to explain that the new film will finally (FINALLY!) feature everyone’s favorite part of the game: the Fatalities.
Since it's already been stated by other members of the team, I'm gonna put this one to bed. MK WILL be R-Rated and for the first time EVER, FATALITIES will FINALLY be on the big screen (and no I'm not gonna say which ones) You'll just have to wait for the movie & see!!! pic.twitter.com/aVTewH4t28

“Since it’s already been stated by other members of the team, I’m gonna put this one to bed,” Russo began. “MK WILL be R-Rated and for the first time EVER, FATALITIES will FINALLY be on the big screen (and no I’m not gonna say which ones) You’ll just have to wait for the movie & see!!!”
The first video game was released in 1992, and featured a diverse range of fighters hailing from eighteen different realms become pitted against one another in an epic tournament. A number of sequels followed, including the most recent, Mortal Kombat 11, being released last month.
This also marks the third Mortal Kombat movie. The first, 1995’s Mortal Kombat was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. Two years later was a sequel, Annihilation, which paved the way for two television series: the animated Defenders of the Realm and the live-action Konquest. Two web series have been released based on the property as well from director Kevin Tancharoen.

The new Mortal Kombat movie will follow a male protagonist who becomes drawn into the interdimensional tournament, and who begins to realize his true potential as a result of the experience. Wan and his Atomic Monster banner will produce along with Todd Garner. Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, and Sean Robins are executive producing.
The film, which is set to hit theaters on March 5, 2021, will go head-to-head with Sony’s upcoming film adaptation of the classic Mattel toy and cartoon franchise Masters of the Universe, an untitled Universal Pictures Event Film and Fox’s family animated adventure Nimona.
