Mary-Louise Parker to return in Weeds sequel series for Starz
It has already been seven years since the series finale of Showtime dark comedy-drama Weeds had premiered in 2012, and now Variety brings word that Lionsgate Television and Starz are currently teaming up to produce and develop a spinoff sequel to the award-winning to the award-wining series which will be titled Weeds 4.20. Original series star Mary-Louise Parker is also set to return for the sequel, reprising her roles as the widowed pot dealer Nancy Botwin.
“As excited as we are about our new series, I want to remind everyone that ‘the old is also new,’ and we’re pleased to be bringing two of the most acclaimed shows in television history, ‘Mad Men’ and ‘Weeds,’ to the global syndication marketplace next year,” Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said in a statement. “We will be launching the marketing campaign for ‘Mad Men,’ winner of 16 Emmys and five Golden Globes during its eight-year run, later this month. And we’re thrilled to be back in business with series star and producer Mary Louise Parker on what we’re calling ‘Weeds 4.20,’ already in active development at Starz, as we prepare a comprehensive and integrated rollout for one of television’s most beloved properties.”

Weeds 4.20 will be picking up with the Botwin family 10 years after the events of the original series in an era of marijuana legalization. The series will be written and executive produced by Weeds writer Victoria Morrow. Emmy Award and Golden Globe winner Mary-Louise Parker has also signed on as an executive producer. However, it is still unclear if other cast members would also be returning for the sequel or not.
The original series ran on-air for eight seasons from 2007-2012 which was created by Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan, who is not attached to the sequel series. Weeds starred Parker, Elizabeth Perkins, Justin Kirk, Hunter Parrish, Alexander Gould, and Kevin Nealon. It had garnered numerous awards and nominations during its run including two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.
