Judd Apatow’s Pete Davidson comedy King of Staten Island going to VOD

In a move that’s becoming increasingly less surprising, Universal Pictures has announced that the upcoming Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live)-led comedy The King of Staten Island from co-writer/director Judd Apatow (This is 40, Trainwreck) is skipping a theatrical release and heading straight to VOD this summer. The comedy was set to hit theaters on June 19, but will now hit VOD and digital platforms on June 12.

Davidson wrote the script to the film along with Apatow and Dave Sirus, which is described in the report “as a semi-autobiographical story of Davidson growing up in Staten Island, New York.” The young actor lost his father in 9/11, an event that obviously had a vital impact on his life. At age 16 he jumped into stand-up and used “stark, truthful” language on sensitive topics, including the loss of his father.

Apatow may not have directed a big screen feature since 2015, but he has kept busy with projects such as the 30 for 30 documentary Doc & Darryl, the documentary May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers, along with TV shows Crashing, Love and The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling. Barry Mendel (Funny People) will produce alongside Apatow through his Apatow Productions banner. Universal’s Senior Executive Vice President Erik Baiers will oversee the project for the studio.

Davidson joined SNL when he was just 20-years-old and has since appeared in numerous TV shows including Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Jim Gaffigan Show. He also had a bit part in the aforementioned Trainwreck and has earned critical raves for his performance in the comedy Big Time Adolescence.
