Freaky Leads Another Sluggish Pre-Thanksgiving Box Office

Freaky Leads Another Sluggish Pre-Thanksgiving Box Office

The Vince Vaughn comedy-thriller Freaky again took the top spot at the box office in its second week of release, collecting $1.2M (-66%) over the 3-day weekend. Cumulatively, the film has amassed $5.6M and $9.2M worldwide.

We’re obviously a long way off from the numbers posted a year ago at this time when Frozen II exploded into theaters with $130.3M.

As noted by Deadline, the weekend marks a low point for the theater industry which has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. And with more theaters closing once more due to safety ordinances and curfews, there appears to be no relief in sight. Will things ever go back to normal? And if they do, will people be as eager to go to movie theaters again after spending nearly a year watching films and TV shows from the comfort of their own homes?

Indeed, only one new majorly release hit theaters this weekend, the Jackie Chan thriller Vanguard, and that pic only managed a paltry $400K at 1,375 theaters.

Is there any hope that Wonder Woman 1984 can turn things around on Christmas Day, particularly now since the film is going to release simultaneously on HBO Max? As it stands, only 2,850 theaters are currently open across the country — down some 500+ less than the weekend prior.

This Wednesday sees the release of the DreamWorks Animation film The Croods: A New Age, which will play in theaters for 30 days before hitting PVOD right before Christmas. It’ll be interesting to see how that film fares over the Thanksgiving weekend, which usually ranks amongst the most profitable for the motion picture industry.
