The Croods: A New Age Dominates Quiet Thanksgiving Box Office

The Croods: A New Age topped the Thanksgiving box office this weekend earning an estimated $9.7M from Friday to Sunday, $14.2M over its first 5-days of release and $35M worldwide, according to Deadline. That domestic number bests the $9.35M Labor Day gross of Tenet, which gives Croods the biggest opening during the pandemic. So, yay? Look, these numbers were never expected to be huge, so kudos to Universal for shelling out the big bucks to lure families into theaters.

The family sequel played on 868 IMAX screens across the globe where it totaled $2.6M — $500K from 175 screens in North America.

The debut sets up a nice run for Croods, which experts believe can leg out a $42M domestic haul over Christmas, though the film’s expected December PVOD release could impact those numbers. All told, the sequel cost just $65M before P&A, which is much lower than the hefty $135M price tag of the original.

Coming in at number two is the Universal/Blumhouse feature Freaky, which dipped 40% in its third weekend with $770K over the 3-day weekend ($1.1M over 5-days) and $7M total. War with Grandpa hauled in $892K over 5-days for $17.2M total at No. 3.

Further down the line at number eight, Tenet quietly crossed $300M at the international box office, bringing its worldwide take to $357.8M with a number of markets still on the docket.
