San Diego Comic-Con Special Edition Set for Thanksgiving Weekend

San Diego Comic-Con Special Edition Set for Thanksgiving Weekend

With a virtual WonderCon now in the books, Comic-Con International closed the show with a whopper of an announcement. In addition to the virtual summer convention held in late July, an in-person convention will now officially return to the San Diego convention center this fall. Entitled Comic-Con Special Edition, it will take place over Thanksgiving weekend.

Per an announcement, picked up by Variety, “It is our hope that by Fall conditions will permit larger public gatherings. Comic-Con Special Edition will be the first in-person convention produced by the organization since Comic-Con 2019, and the first since the onset of the global pandemic COVID-19. The Fall event will allow the organization to highlight all the great elements that make Comic-Con such a popular event each year, as well as generate much needed revenue not only for the organization but also for local businesses and the community.” Then, in 2022, the hope is for both WonderCon and Comic-Con to return to live events.

While the move to a holiday weekend may seem controversial, it’s not new for pop-culture conventions. WonderCon often takes place on Easter weekend, while Anime Expo typically happens over Fourth of July. Traffic in and out of San Diego might be even more intimidating than usual, however.
