While the Michael B. Jordan-led sequels continue to power forward with the Oscar nominee reprising his iconic role, it’s been 15 years since audiences last got a solo Rocky venture from creator Sylvester Stallone and now the filmmaker has revealed he’s working on a prequel series to the film franchise. Stallone took to Instagram to offer a peek at his handwritten story treatment for the project, which can be viewed below!

“This may be the strangest posting yet,” Stallone wrote in his post. “I started out this morning by writing a treatment for a Rocky prequel For streaming. Ideally 10 episodes for a few seasons to really get to the heart of the Characters in there younger years – Here is a small portion of how my creative writing Process starts…Hope it happens – And then I needed to clear my head so I went fishing… Talk about extremes! Keep punching my friends.”

The idea for a Rocky prequel first started kicking up in July 2019 when Stallone confirmed in an interview with Variety that he had been reflecting on the concept for a streaming platform but noted that there was a hitch in its development as franchise producer Irwin Winkler disagreed with the TV approach, believing the character to work better in the film format.

On that front, Stallone has been developing a seventh — and likely final — mainline film for a few years that would see his character befriending a young illegal immigrant and taking him under his wing, with the 74-year-old stating last May that while he’s still working on the project, it has yet to receive an official greenlight from studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

The Rocky franchise first began in 1976 with Stallone writing and starring in the John G. Avildsen-helmed film, which became a box office sleeper hit and garnered ten Oscar nominations and won three, including Best Picture, Best Direct and Best Film Editing. While the subsequent sequels would dip in critical reception and be mostly absent from the Oscars and Golden Globes, save for Rocky III‘s “Eye of the Tiger” and Stallone’s Best Supporting Actor nod for Creed, it has amassed a large fan base in its 45 years and grossed nearly $1.7 billion across its eight films.
