According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar winner Mark Rylance has officially signed on to join Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film adaptation of Bones & All, based on Camille DeAngelis’ romantic horror novel of the same name. The acclaimed English actor will be joining previously announced lead stars Taylor Russell (Escape Room) and Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet, who are currently filming the project in New York.

Rylance’s notable film credits include The Other Boleyn Girl, Bridge of Spies, The BFG, Dunkirk, Ready Player One, and most recently in Aaron Sorkin’s historical drama The Trial of Chicago 7. For his performance in Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies, he earned his first Oscar Award for Best Supporting Actor. He will next be seen in Adam McKay’s star-studded film Don’t Look Up, and Graham Moore’s crime drama film The Outfit.

Based on Camille DeAngelis’ 2015 novel, Bones & All is being described as a coming-of-age romantic horror story that centers around a young woman named Maren Yearly as she goes on a cross-country trip in search of her father, whom she had never met before. She hopes that by finding her father she will finally have answers to why she has the urge to kill and eat the people she loves.

The book’s official synopsis reads: “Maren Yearly is a young woman who wants the same things we all do. She wants to be someone people admire and respect. She wants to be loved. But her secret, shameful needs have forced her into exile. She hates herself for the bad thing she does, for what it’s done to her family and her sense of identity; for how it dictates her place in the world and how people see her–how they judge her. She didn’t choose to be this way.

Because Maren Yearly doesn’t just break hearts, she devours them. Ever since her mother found Penny Wilson’s eardrum in her mouth when Maren was just two years old, she knew life would never be normal for either of them. Love may come in many shapes and sizes, but for Maren, it always ends the same-with her hiding the evidence and her mother packing up the car. But when her mother abandons her the day after her sixteenth birthday, Maren goes looking for the father she has never known, and finds much more than she bargained for along the way. Faced with a world of fellow eaters, potential enemies, and the prospect of love, Maren realizes she isn’t only looking for her father, she’s looking for herself.”

Bones & All will be directed and produced by Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay adapted by Dave Kajganich. Production is currently underway, with no distributor still attached to the project. The film adaptation marks the second collaboration between Chalamet and Guadagnino, who are reuniting after four years since 2017’s acclaimed coming-of-age drama Call Me By Your Name which launched the 25-year-old actor into stardom.
