The first expansion for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is on the horizon. Square Enix released a teaser trailer for Trials of the Dragon King, a DLC that will add several new areas and a host of additional weapons, jobs, and equipment to the base game. It’s one-third of the game’s season pass (which also includes Wanderer of the Rift and Different Future), and it releases on July 30 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
Trials of the Dragon King picks up directly after the primary campaign and features Jack’s team fighting against the titular Dragon King Bahamut. The teaser also showcases the Warrior of Light, the modern representation of the hero from the original Final Fantasy game and someone destined for a collision course with Jack.
The game’s other two DLCs are also forthcoming, but it doesn’t seem like we’ll get much word on when they’ll release until they’re almost ready to go. However, Producer Tetsuya Nomura did recently spill some details about these expansions, but those details were vague at best.
Stranger of Paradise may bear the Final Fantasy name, but it’s much different from the games that immediately come to mind. An action RPG with combat that borrows from the soulslike space, this over-the-top retelling of the first Final Fantasy found a different fanbase amid memes surrounding how much main character Jack hates chaos in all its forms.

Both Godzilla and King Kong will return to movie theaters in early 2024 as the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel release date has been set by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures.
The currently untitled film has a new release date of March 15, 2024. The previous film in the franchise came out on March 31, 2021, so it’s essentially a three-year gap between films. The movie will also be released in Imax theaters.
The upcoming fifth installment to the blockbuster franchise will be delivering a $79.2 million economic boost to Queensland as well as the creation of 505 jobs for local cast and crew and opportunities for 750 extras.
The only actor currently attached to the film is Dan Stevens with director Adam Wingard returning to direct. Further details about the project are still kept under wraps, but initial reports last year suggested that it would potentially be titled Son of Kong. The project will be produced by Eric McLeod, Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Thomas Tull, and Jon Jashni.
The 2021 film was directed by Wingard from a screenplay written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein. It starred Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and more. Despite its simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max debut, it still went on to earn a gross of more than $460 million at the worldwide box office.
Fans will have to wait a bit longer for the conclusion to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic as the Dune: Part Two release date has been pushed back.
Originally set for an October 20, 2023, release, the film is now set to release a month later. The new Dune: Part Two release date is November 17, 2023, which will coincide with a release in Imax theaters. Thankfully, this delay isn’t that long, so fans won’t have to wait much longer than originally anticipated.
Dune: Part Two will once again be directed by Denis Villeneuve. The returning cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin. Joining them is Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV, with Florence Pugh and Austin Butler set for the respective roles of Princess Irulan and
Last year, Dune has gone to garner critical acclaim from fans and critics alike. Earlier this year it also racked up a whopping 10 Academy Award nominations and has won six of it including Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects.
Following the success of Mare of Easttown, Deadline brings word that Oscar winner Kate Winslet has officially found her next project with HBO in the form of another limited series titled Trust. Based on Hernan Diaz’s bestselling 2022 novel of the same name, Winslet has signed on for the leading role in the upcoming adaptation, which is still currently in development.
HBO nabbed the rights to the Trust novel following its first publication last May by Riverbooks. The TV adaptation will be executive produced by Winslet and Diaz.
“The story centers around a wealthy financier who is dissatisfied by a novel based on his life and his wife’s portrayal, so he asks a secretary to ghostwrite his memoir and set the record straight,” reads the synopsis. “The secretary, however, grows uncomfortably aware that he is rewriting history—and his wife’s place in it. Told in four different voices and genres, Trust is a narrative puzzle that subverts the notion of truth and who gets to define it.”
For her leading performance as Mare Sheehan in Mare of Easttown, Winslet won Emmy and Golden Globe awards both for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. She will next be seen in James Cameron’s long-gestated sequel Avatar: The Way of Water.

Peacock has officially announced the release date for its forthcoming teen supernatural drama Vampire Academy, which hails from The Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec. The 10-episode series adaptation is scheduled to make its debut on September 15, exclusively on Peacock.
The leads are Sisi Stringer (Mortal Kombat) and Daniela Nieves (Sex Appeal). Stringer plays Rose Hathaway, the vampire-human hybrid who’s training to become a guardian at St. Vladimir’s Academy, while Nieves’Lissa Dragomir is vampire royalty.
Based on Richelle Mead’s bestselling YA supernatural romance novel series, Vampire Academy is created, written, and executive produced by Julie Plec, who will also serve as showrunner and director. The adaptation is expected to tell the story of friendship, romance, and danger.
“In a world of privilege and glamour, two young women’s friendship transcends their strikingly different classes as they prepare to complete their education and enter vampire society,” reads the synopsis. “One as a powerful Royal, the other a half-vampire Guardian trained to protect against the savage ‘Strigoi’ who threaten to tear their society apart. That is, if Royal infighting doesn’t do the job first.”
Stringer and Nieves will be joined by Kieron Moore (Sex Education), Andre Dae Kim (Degrassi), J. August Richards (Generation), Anita-Joy Uwajeh (West End’s Cyrano de Bergerac and King Lear), Mia McKenna Bruce (The Dumping Ground), Rhian Blundell (Torchwood: Believe), Jonetta Kaiser (Tales) and Andrew Liner (Grown-ish).
The Vampire Academy series will also be co-written and co-executive produced by Plec’s long-time collaborator Marguerite MacIntyre, who is also set as a showrunner. It is a production by Universal Television.
Executive producers are Emily Cummins, Don Murphy, Susan Montford, Deepak Nayar, and Jillian DeFrehn, with Bille Woodruff, Luis Prieto, Jesse Warn, Erica Dunton, and Geoff Shotz attached to direct.
Watch an American adventurer taking on an ancient Egyptian mummy on HBO Max.
On June 30, 1999’s The Mummy, its first direct sequel, and its prequel will disappear from the content available on HBO Max. Fans still have a few days to catch up with the adventures of Brendan Fraser’s Rick O’Connell as he deals with Imhotep and his legion of mummified priests. The movie written and directed by Stephen Sommers was a huge box-office success, which translated into two more stories set in the same universe, The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Scorpion King (2002). The franchise also includes 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Ms. Marvel is just a couple of episodes away from ending its first run.
In the recently released fourth installment, Kamala Khan visited her origin country, Pakistan, where she discovered new details about her family and the golden bangle. She also teamed up with Red Dagger, a precious ally who helped her push back the Clandestine’s latest attack. Now, the titular heroine will have to find a way to get back home to the U.S., where the showdown with Clandestine will likely go down.
When to Watch Ms. Marvel Episode 5
Ms. Marvel Episode 5 will debut on Disney+ at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT slot on Wednesday, July 6. The episode is directed by Academy Award-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and written by Fatimah Asghar. It will be the penultimate episode in the first season of Ms. Marvel. At the moment, there are no indications that the series will be renewed for a sophomore season. Unfortunately, some reports indicate that the series has the lowest ratings among any Marvel Cinematic Universe series at Disney+.
While Marvel Studios might greenlight Season 2 no matter what, it’s safe to assume that there might be some serious talks about it. A reason to hope that Ms. Marvel might return sooner or later is that the series was a hit among critics, who generally appreciated Kamala Khan’s adventures. Worst case scenario, Kamala’s fans will have to wait for Nia DaCosta’s The Marvelsto see their favorite superheroine back in action. The Captain Marvel sequel will debut on July 28, 2023, also starring Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris.
“The series introduces Kamala Khan—a 16-year-old Pakistani American from Jersey City,” reads the official synopsis. “An aspiring artist, an avid gamer, and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, she is a huge fan of the Avengers—and one in particular, Captain Marvel. But Kamala has always struggled to find her place in the world—that is, until she gets superpowers like the heroes she’s always looked up to.”
Adil El Arbi directed Ms. Marvel in addition to executive producing together with Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Bisha K. Ali serves as executive producer and head writer.

“In the film, Margaret leads a successful and orderly life, perfectly balancing the demands of her busy career and single parenthood to her fiercely independent daughter Abbie,” reads the synopsis. “Everything is under control. But that careful balance is upended when an unwelcome shadow from her past, David returns, carrying with him the horrors of Margaret’s past. Battling her rising fear, Margaret must confront the monster she’s evaded for two decades who has come to conclude their unfinished business.”

Netflix has successfully acquired the rights to the film adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel titled The Electric State, which will be directed by Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo. Leading the sci-fi drama film is Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, who has been attached to the project since 2020. Production is scheduled to begin this fall.
This marks the Russo Brothers’ latest collaboration with the streamer ahead of the long-awaited debut of their upcoming global spy thriller The Gray Man, starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling. Meanwhile, The Electric State will be Brown’s fourth feature with Netflix after Enola Holmes and the upcoming Enola Holmes 2 and Damsel films.
First published in 2018, The Electric State novel is set in an alternative future where a teenage girl discovers a strange robot that was sent to her by her missing brother. The outlet notes that Chris Pratt is currently in negotiations to star alongside Brown.
“Set in a retro-futuristic past, it follows an orphaned teen (Brown) as she traverses the American West with a robot and an eccentric drifter in search of her younger brother,” reads the logline.
The film adaptation will be directed by Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo from a screenplay written by Endgame scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The project was previously set up at Universal Pictures.
The Russo Brothers will also be serving as producers along with Mike Larocca through their AGBO banner. Executive producers are Angela Russo-Otstot, Jake Aust, Geoff Haley, Markus, and McFeely, with Chris Castaldi and Patrick Newall serving as producers.
The Electric State film has been in development since 2017 and was originally set to be developed by IT duo Andy and Barbara Muschietti with Andy Muschietti serving as the director. However, Andy Muschietti decided to give up his directorial duties on the project in order to shift his focus on Warner Bros.’ highly-anticipated Flash movie.
PlayStation Plus had a big June with the rollout of the two new tiers, but that doesn’t mean its original tier is going away. PlayStation Plus Essential, said lowest tier, will still get a few games every month. Sony recently announced what the PlayStation Plus Essential July 2022 lineup is, and it includes Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan, and Arcadegeddon. This game will be available from July 5 to August 1.
Crash Bandicoot 4 is arguably the biggest title and users will get access to the PlayStation 4 original and PlayStation 5 upgrade. The platformer was critically acclaimed for its animation, tight controls, and sense of humor. PS4 users can transfer their save to the PS5 version to pop most of their previously unlocked trophies and enjoy shorter load times, sharper visuals, and a more consistent frame rate. There’s also rumors of a multiplayer Crash game in the works, but that has yet to be officially announced.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan is the lone PS4-only game. It was the first entry into The Dark Pictures and released in 2019 to tepid reviews, garnering a 71 average. The horror adventure game sets players on a haunted boat and lets them make a variety of choices to try and stay alive, which is typical for Supermassive Games, the team that just recently released The Quarry. The game features several actors, including Shawn Ashmore in a lead role.
Arcadegeddon is the newest title of the bunch and will have both PS4 and PS5 versions. This arcade co-op shooter released in early access in 2021 and was just recently announced to be coming out of the program for a July 5 launch. This is one of Illfonic’s only projects that isn’t based off an existing IP, as it has developed Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds, as well as the upcoming Ghostbusters: Spirits Within. Both Friday the 13th and Predator have been released on PlayStation Plus in past years, too.
This lineup was leaked beforehand, which is almost always the case. As reported by Video Games Chronicle, Dealabs user billbil-kun gave the full list a few days before the official announcement.
When I was a kid, my favorite movie was Despicable Me. It was a funny movie about a villain changing his ways in a satisfying, emotional narrative. But when Illumination saw those cute yellow sidekicks in that film and decided to give them their own spin-off franchise, the quality of these movies declined. So, seven years after their spin-off grossed over $1 billion at the box office, the Minions are back in Minions: The Rise of Gru, an animated comedy adventure set years before Despicable Me. This film features a 12-year-old Gru (Steve Carell) in his quest to join a supervillain group named the Vicious 6 with the help of his Minions.
Minions: The Rise of Gru is an acceptable, mildly enjoyable piece of entertainment that will keep children having fun for an hour and a half, but it won’t do much more than that. Hollywood has given us the rises of Skywalker, Cobra, the Machines, and the Planet of the Apes. Now, it’s Gru’s turn to rise as the new leader of this series after his cameo at the end of the original Minions. It’s fun to see Gru as a younger, more optimistic character who dreams of being a supervillain. He’s a more youthful, excitable protagonist getting used to hanging around the Minions.
Director Kyle Balda gets to have a little bit of fun with the newly updated setting. In a matter remarkably similar to The Black Phone (not really), this movie sets itself in the 1970s with music, hairstyles, and costumes that reflect that era. The film also features a classic adventure setup with a precious stone getting stolen from a temple filled with booby traps, and an opening title sequence so absurdly humorous that you would never see it coming. There is a lot about this film to enjoy, from how easily digestible it is to the sheer number of visual gags the Minions have to offer.
The sequel makes the wiser choice of spending a lot of time with the human characters, as opposed to the first film, which featured endless scenes of Minion antics. The Minions movies are not the Godzilla movies, where you want the human scenes to be over as soon as possible so you can get back to the titular creature. You can take all the Minions in the world as a child, but as an adult, endless jibber-jabbering from yellow anthropomorphic Tic-Tacs can send your blood pressure rising through the roof. This film features many human characters with the Vicious 6, a group portrayed by name actors such as Taraji P. Henson, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, and Jean-Claude Van Damme playing a villain named Jean Clawed.
Carell gets to have fun doing his Gru accent at a higher register, and Pierre Coffin gives his all to voicing the Minions. The supporting cast is excellent, including Michelle Yeoh’s mildly triumphant return to the big screen after starring in this year’s masterpiece Everything Everywhere All at Once. She plays Master Chow, a woman skilled in martial arts who trains the heroes in their journey. Of course, this is the character she has already played in films like Boss Level and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but Yeoh is good at her job and always sells it.
While kids will have an absolute blast with this film, it’s reasonable for adult audience members to want more. The potential of an emotional story exists with Gru’s relationship with his disapproving mother, Marlena (Julie Andrews). However, all the depth and childhood drama briefly explored in the original Despicable Me gets sacrificed for farts and burps. The movie never slows down or takes a moment to breathe, offering frenetic comedic timing and throwing gag after gag at the screen.
Are the gags funny? That depends on your MTL (Minion Tolerance Level). Mine is pretty average, which resulted in an experience with some of the jokes being funny and others annoying. Minions: The Rise of Gru is a breezy, 90-minute option best suited for children who have already watched superior animated films such as Lightyear and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. If this is your last option to get your child to laugh and have fun for an hour and a half, it will be a successful choice. Case in point, the 10-year-old kid I saw the film with gave the movie an 11 out of 10. Is this a testament to our younger audiences’ decreasing attention spans and lower standards? It’s hard to say, because there was once a time in my youth when I felt that positively about Despicable Me. So who am I to judge?
SCORE: 6/10
As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 6 equates to “Decent.” It fails to reach its full potential and is a run-of-the-mill experience.
Disclosure: The critic attended a press screening for ComingSoon’s Minions: The Rise of Gru review.

Fruits Basket -Prelude- is out now in select U.S. movie theaters. As a fair warning, anyone who plans on watching it probably needs to bring tissues with them. Love and romance remain major elements in the film’s plot, but this time it focuses on a different couple — Tohru Honda’s mother and father. With that, the movie effectively shows the similarities between Kyo Soma, Tohru, and her parents.
The first part of the movie is a recap of the Fruits Basket anime. Although, it mainly focuses on the development of Tohru and Kyo’s relationship. Meanwhile, the second part highlights protagonists Kyoko and Katsuya Honda. To recap, season three revealed the surprising connection between Kyo and Kyoko. Fruits Basket -Prelude- explored more of that, showing the parallels between the two orange-haired characters. Kyo and Kyoko suffered a dark and troublesome past. However, Tohru and Katsuya showed Kyo and Kyoko what it means to be important to someone.
As for family matters, both Kyo and Kyoko had terrible biological parents. Kyoko grew up in a problematic household due to selfish parents who never cared for her. They only cared about themselves and what other people thought of them. Kyoko ended up becoming a hot-headed and violent delinquent, which greatly disappointed her father. Due to her parents’ lack of love and care, Kyoko ultimately felt that the world didn’t want or need her. She felt immense loneliness — to the point that she wished she was never born. All she wanted was for someone to care about her.
Kyo was in the same boat. Kyo’s father rejected his existence because he was the Cat, and blamed Kyo for the misfortune in their lives. Meanwhile, Kyo’s mother expressed love towards Kyo, but it was mixed with fear. Later on, she takes her own life, and Kyo gets blamed for her death. As a result, Kyo lived with heavy feelings of guilt for simply existing.
One day, Kyoko has a moment of rage in school. Katsuya, the new student teacher, ended up as the witness to Kyoko’s emotional breakdown. After that, Katsuya takes Kyoko out for ramen. The two eventually form a bond, and their relationship develops. From there, Kyoko finally learns what it’s like to feel seen and cared for. But, because of her past, she initially struggled with accepting Katsuya’s feelings. She didn’t understand why Katsuya chose someone like her — she felt undeserving of it. In the Fruits Basket anime, Kyo had similar sentiments regarding Tohru’s feelings for him. Kyo didn’t think he had the right to be with Tohru because of what happened in the past.
Katsuya and Tohru gave Kyoko and Kyo the love and attention they needed. Kyoko turned away from being a delinquent and became more optimistic. Meanwhile, Kyo was more at peace with his past. At the same time, Kyoko and Kyo also helped their partners improve. Katsuya and Tohru opened up to them about their insecurities. These couples are an example of how two people in a relationship could help each other become better.
Fruits Basket -Prelude- further solidified a central theme in the Fruits Basket series. Through Kyo, Tohru, Kyoko, and Katsuya, the film shows its audience how love and understanding can affect one’s outlook on life. It may feel a bit too cheesy for some or simply overrated, but in Fruits Basket, there is beauty in finding someone who will help you even if it feels challenging to help yourself. As Kyoko puts it, “even if the world doesn’t need us, we live for the people who do.”

The See How They Run trailer, which you can check out below along with the poster, features a veteran detective and his clumsy but eager rookie partner as they get involved in a murder mystery case surrounding the suspicious death of Leo Köpernick, an unscrupulous film director. See How They Run stars Rockwell, Ronan, David Oyelowo, Adrien Brody, Ruth Wilson, Harris Dickinson, Sian Clifford, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Shirley Henderson, Reece Shearsmith, Paul Chahidi, Pearl Chanda, Charlie Cooper and Pippa Bennett-Warner.
“In the West End of 1950s London, plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after a pivotal member of the crew is murdered. When world-weary Inspector Stoppard and eager rookie Constable Stalker take on the case, the two find themselves thrown into a puzzling whodunit within the glamorously sordid theater underground, investigating the mysterious homicide at their own peril.”

The Ms. Marvel story keeps expanding as the fourth episode hit Disney+ earlier today. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, “Seeing Red” took Kamala Khan and her mother to their homeland of Pakistan. In Karachi, they reunited with Kamala’s grandmother, Sana, who unveiled new details about Kamala’s great-grandmother Aisha and the golden bangle. Kamala also met Red Dagger, a Pakistani vigilante who turned out to be a precious ally.
Ms. Marvel met Red Dagger at the train station while exploring Karachi in Ms. Marvel Episode 4. After spending some time with her cousins, Kamala chose to go alone to the train station to understand the source of her visions better. Once on the platform, she was attacked by a mysterious masked vigilante who threw daggers at her. The pair had a brief clash that ended without winners or losers before they agreed they were on the same side. Red Dagger then brought Kamala to his hideout, where Waleed (Farhan Akhtar) showed Kamala the difference between the reality they were living in and the alternate one from where Aisha and the Clandestine came — or Djinn if you prefer.
Into the Badlands alum Aramis Knight is portraying Red Dagger in Ms. Marvel. Knight has been trusted with the task to give life to Kareem, a.k.a. Laal Khanjeer, as he is known in Karachi. The character was created by G. Willow Wilson and Mirka Andolfo and made his debut in 2016’s Ms. Marvel #12. He is a crafted marksman with his knives, fighting against corruption and violence at night and studying for his university entrance exam at day. In the comics, Red Dagger and Ms. Marvel met during her visit to Pakistan. The pair met again when Kareem went to Jersey City for an exchange student program in the U.S., as told in 2017’s Ms. Marvel #23.
Does Red Dagger Have Powers?
Unlike Kamala, Red Dagger has no powers in the comics or the series. Kareem is an ace with the knives he wears in his utility belt and can run in acrobatic parkour sessions, but he can’t fly, nor does he show any superpowers. In the comics, he learns to fight through YouTube tutorials. In spite of the unorthodox training method, the Pakistani vigilante proved that he could stand his ground against villains in hand-to-hand combat.

“We are ecstatic to be teaming up with Gravitas Ventures, a distributor that has been around for so long with such a large library of films. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to help push the film’s important message gives us confidence that it will impact the right audience,” said Poli.
Marcus was produced by Poli, Jose Luis Martinez, and Owen Miller.
ComingSoon spoke with Gatlopp director Alberto Belli to discuss the board game comedy, which is out now on digital and on demand.
“A group of old friends reunites for a nostalgic evening of fun and games after a decade apart,” says the synopsis. “After one too many, they decide to play a drinking game, but it’s quickly revealed that this game comes with supernatural stakes. Mischief leads to mayhem, and the group realizes that if they can’t come together to win the game by sunrise, they will be forced to play for eternity – in hell.”
Tyler Treese: What were your biggest influences growing up. Who really inspired you to become a director?
Alberto Belli: For sure. I mean, Steven Spielberg, like a lot of people in my generation, I saw Jurassic Park on the big screen. I think it was one of my first movies. I was like, “Whoa, I want to be part of that.” Yeah, that was the one that made it for me.
You have a background directing so many shorts. For your feature debut, did anything surprise you, or did that experience kind of make sure you were ready?
I think yeah, like the short experience, and I had done a TV series before in Mexico, so that kind of didn’t feel any different, I guess. What felt different was, we were shooting during COVID, just when it was the worst in 2020. So that was a lot of getting used to it with a mask and directing actors with a mask, and all those protocols. So that was big learning curve more than actually the filmmaking itself
Jim Mahoney wrote the film and he stars in it. Had you known him prior to this or how did you two get involved?
Oh, I did. So, funny story, he co-wrote a short film that I had done before that went viral, called It’s Not Porn, It’s HBO, and that kind of opened our careers, probably like three years before making this movie. Then we always wanted to keep working together and we were having lunch one day, and then he pitched me this idea and I was like, “Oh my god, that’s a brilliant idea,” because I love Jumanji and all those movies. I was like, let’s do this. So we were friends, and we’ve been really good friends since doing that viral video a bunch of years ago.
It’s such a fun idea. Like you said, it’s very much in the vein of a Jumanji with the haunted board game. How much fun did you have working on those cards and working on the physical board game?
Oh, I honestly loved it. We worked with a team who also created the title sequence for us, and I really wanted to get a sense of, kind of like vintage, but modern, right? Like, this game is supposed to have some sort of history. So it feels like it’s been played for a long time, but also trying to keep it modern. And then we went through many, many designs and this one felt right.
I love what they created with all of the little details. A lot of the themes of the movies, like green is supposed to be the ex-wife. So a lot of the boxes, as you keep winning, the game becomes green. And then we had all these thematic ideas that we were able to put in the game, and it was so much fun. Like my dream would be it becomes a real board game.
Can you talk about Jim’s script and what really stood out about it and made you want to fully jump on board here?
I guess because obviously, we did it with a very limited budget, I was always wondering how are we going to pull this off an interesting idea with the limited budget that we have? And I think what he brilliantly did was, instead of trying to focus on the VFX and trying to make it like a spectacle of VFX, it was more a spectacle of acting. A lot of the challenges or the twists of the movie are more about switching the bodies, it’s about actors acting differently, or it was about them getting emotional. It was more about how smart he was creating these challenges that didn’t imply like, a humongous amount of money. And it was more about let’s have faith in the actors, so then they’ll be able to bring it to life.
I loved the use of flashbacks, particularly with the Polaroid pictures. What led to the choice of using that framing device and going in-depth on these characters’ backgrounds.
We felt that it was an interesting way to differentiate the present and the past. And then since the situation was Cliff having all these polaroids in his house, we were working with our DP and we were like, how about if we actually take that idea, and then all of the flashbacks look like those Polaroids? So their memories are part of those photographs. So we were very inspired by that, and then trying to make it stay consistent so it’s very easy to hopefully differentiate the past and the present.
I thought the jazzercise scene in the film was really inspired and fun. What led to the creation of that?
Thanks. I mean, I guess I love musicals and Jim, too. So, again, it is a challenge more about the actors performing rather than this crazy VFX thing. So it was more of, I think we need a break in between the movie that is not so traumatic or too far or whatever, so how about we put a dance scene there so people will laugh? So I’m glad that you responded to that. And then to be honest, I think Emma and I mean, Emmy [Raver-Lampman] and Jon Bass were both on Broadway, so I was very excited, like, “Oh, I hope they’re going to do a crazy dance.” And they were able to pull it off. I think they learned the dance the day before, so it’s kind of insane.
What surprised me about the film was that there’s a lot of heart to it. It’s a lot about coming to grips with your own faults and failures. What do you hope people take away from this?
I think hopefully first of all, good laugh and entertaining. That was one of Jim and I’s goals, to create a movie that is fun and entertaining, that kind of makes you forget about your problems, but at the same time, try to make people think about reconnecting with people that they haven’t talked about in a while. I think it happens to all of us where you are, either you move cities or you change work, or you just forget about your old friends, a lot of the things that you did with them. So hopefully the message of it’s worth probably reconnecting with your old friends to have a fun night and maybe even play a board game that hopefully is not cursed.
You have such a great cast here. I’m sure the shoot was pretty quick, but did you have much time to kind of experiment and improv with the cast?
Not really. No, because kind of like you said, it was a very short amount of time. We just got very lucky that somehow the cast got along amazingly, even when they were off-camera, you would feel that they were best friends forever, and then they literally met like a day before. And we also did a lot of the chemistry read back in the day with Zooms, which was very awkward. But even through Zoom, you could tell that they were going to get along. Like, it was very, I feel very lucky that I didn’t have to work on their friendship because they just came out naturally to them.
