Box Office Results: Dinosaurs Rule as Lightyear Fails to Take Off

In a surprising turn of events, Jurassic World Dominion claimed the top spot at the domestic box office for the second straight week, earning $68 million over the 4-day holiday weekend ($58.66 million 3-day) to raise its cute to an impressive $259.1 million. The dinos took a huge bite out of Disney/Pixar’s Lightyear, forcing the animated adventure to settle for $55 million ($51 million 3-day) in its debut week — far below industry expectations, per Deadline.

Now, it’s possible Buzz could leg it out via strong word of mouth (the film received an A- CinemaScore and mostly positive reviews from critics), but even that seems unlikely as Universal’s Minions is just around the corner and set for a July 1 release, followed by Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8) and Paws of Fury (July 15). Really, audiences may simply be waiting for Lightyear to hit Disney+ rather than invest in the theatrical experience.

Globally, the Toy Story spin-off earned a meager $34.6 million from 43 offshore markets, raising its worldwide take to $85.6 million.

Jurassic World, meanwhile, took in another $76.1 million abroad and has now collected $622.2M worldwide. China chipped in solid support with $24 million.

Speaking of hits, Tom Cruise’s blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick continues to soar. In its fourth week, the action adventure raked in $48 million over the 4-day holiday ($44 million 3-day) and has now reached $470.1M domestically. Worldwide, the film has earned $800 million, making it Cruise’s biggest movie ever globally.
