What Is Pachinko About?

Pachinko is the live-action adaptation of author Min Jin Lee’s work by the same name, a historical fiction novel that debuted in 2017 and follows the story of four generations of a Korean family after moving to Japan at the beginning of the 20th century. The book received strong reviews and was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction.

“Epic in scope and intimate in tone, the story begins with a forbidden love and crescendos into a sweeping saga that journeys between Korea, Japan, and America to tell an unforgettable story of war and peace, love and loss, triumph and reckoning,” reads the synopsis. “Filled with universal themes of family, fate, and resilience, the series centers around a Korean immigrant family across four generations as they leave their homeland in an indomitable quest to survive and thrive. Starting in South Korea in the early 1900s, the story is told through the eyes of a remarkable matriarch, Sunja, who triumphs against all odds. It juxtaposes her story with that of her grandson, Solomon, in the 1980s.”

Who Is Portraying Kim Sunja in Pachinko?

The main protagonist of Pachinko is Kim Sunja, a strong woman portrayed by Youn Yuh-jung. Fans will remember her acting as Min-jung in Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s Sense8. Her credits also include working in 2020’s Minari and voicing Sun-Hee in The Boys Presents: Diabolical, among other things.

Additionally, Pachinko features an international ensemble consisting of Soji Arai as Mozasu, Jin Ha as Solomon, Inji Jeong as Yangjin, Minha Kim as teenage Sunja, Lee Minho as Hansu, Kaho Minami as Etsuko, Steve Sanghyun Noh as Isak, Anna Sawai as Naomi, Junwoo Han as Yoseb, Jung Eun-chae as Young Kyunghee, Jimmi Simpson as Tom Andrews, Yu-na Jeon as young Sunja, and Academy Award-winning actress Youn Yuh Jung as older Sunja.

The historical drama series has been well received by critics and fans alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, the critics’ approval rating is 98% based on 57 critic reviews, while the audience score sits at 95%.

“Justin Chon, as well as a uniformly excellent ensemble cast, beautifully conveys the sweep and spirit of the novel. The only major misstep is a structural choice that undermines Lee’s carefully paced storytelling,” said Time Magazine‘s Judy Berman.

“Deeply emotional, this eight-episode Apple TV+ series barely scratches the surface of the novel upon which it’s based, and will surely leave a core audience clamoring for more,” per CNN‘s Brian Lowry.

Is Pachinko Suitable for Kids?

No, Pachinko is not suitable for kids. The series has been rated TV-MA, which means that parents might find some of the content unsuitable for children under 17.
