Tom Cruise is about to embark on his most ambitious project yet- a movie set in space. That’s one small step for man but one giant step for Tom Cruise.
The Mission: Impossible actor appears to never be afraid of large feats. As a veteran actor whose graced audiences for the past four decades, Tom Cruise has a keen sense of adventure. We’ve seen the 61-year-old actor scuba dive, skydive, jump off buildings, and even fly planes. Just when you think he’s done it all, his next enterprising film will actually take place in space.
For over a decade, we’ve seen mind-blowing space movies from Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity to Ad Astra. However, interstellar realism was because of the green screen effects. Tom Cruise’s new film will be groundbreaking for its on-set space location, with NME confirming plans are still a-go.
When asked about his upcoming film’s status at the premiere of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One via Variety, he said, “We’ve been working on it diligently and we’ll see where we go.”
That’s a major relief! After all, how many people can say they were part of a project filmed high above Earth? In 2020, announcements declared that Edge of Tomorrow’s Doug Liman would helm Tom Cruise’s space movie, with Elon Musk and NASA being a part of it. During the pandemic, Cruise pitched this untitled film to Universal Pictures executive Donna Langley through a Zoom call. Langley said the film’s primary location will be Earth, but Cruise’s character would travel to space to save the day. Unfortunately, issues navigating space insurance caused delays in the space travel plans for filming in 2021, as reported by ComicBook. Plus, planning this film during a pandemic didn’t help matters either.
What current progress is happening for Tom Cruise’s movie?
As of yet, progress on Tom Cruise’s space movie project and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two are on pause because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. However, NME said Liman is in the process of writing the movie’s script with an estimated budget of $200 million. Christopher McQuarrie, who writes and directs the Mission: Impossible movies, will be the upcoming film’s story advisor and producer along with Cruise, Liman, and PJ van Sandwijk. Let’s take it as a good sign that the ball is still rolling on this upcoming space movie.
