Paramount set to adapt Ology book series into franchise
Deadline brings word that Paramount Pictures has set up another writer’s room in the interest of hammering out a hopeful franchise for the studio. This time they’ve nabbed the rights to the Ology book series.
Created by author Dugald Steer, the books are put together as a series of encyclopedias and guides about various fantasy and other genre elements. Entries in the series include Dragonology, Egyptology, Wizardology, Pirateology, Mythology, Spyology, Oceanology, Vampireology, Alienology, Illusionology, Dinosaurology, Dungeonology, and Knightology.
The writer’s room that Paramount has assembled will be headed up by Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and includes Jeff Pinkner (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon, Lindsey Beer (The Kingkiller Chronicle), Joe Robert Cole (Black Panther, The People Vs. OJ Simpson), Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel), and Christina Hodson (Bumblebee).
Deadline notes that Paramount is hoping each of the writers will take to one of the 13 books in the series and come up with a treatment for adapting it into a feature film. After developing the ideas, and creating concept art for the films, the long-term plan is to create a series of seven interconnected scripts. The outlet notes Paramount wants to make the series into “a live-action family franchise universe, built around a research institute, where the fringe sciences that no one else takes seriously are studied in earnest.”
