Orphan Black co-creator boards Snowpiercer as showrunner
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Graeme Manson (Orphan Black) is set to be the new showrunner for TNT’s upcoming series Snowpiercer. The sci-fi series is based on the 2013 film starring Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton which is set seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland. It largely centers on the remnants of humanity who inhabit a gigantic, perpetually moving train that circles the globe and explores class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival.
The series stars Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly and Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs alongside Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Susan Park, Benjamin Haigh, Sasha Frolova, Katie McGuinness, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina, Sheila Vand and Lena Hall.
Manson replaces original showrunner Josh Friedman who wrote the pilot that ultimately led to it being picked up to series. The outlet reports that Friedman exited over creative differences with the network. Sarah Aubrey, exec VP originals at TNT expressed the network’s excitement with having Manson aboard the project and credits his work on Orphan Black as a reason for why he’s perfect for the gig:
“Graeme’s extensive background in the sci-fi genre coupled with his brilliant work behind Orphan Black made him the perfect choice for this series… He is the best conductor to navigate the thought provoking and delicate themes of the series while bringing this frozen, futuristic world to life.”
Manson and John Fawcett co-created the Tatiana Maslany-led BBC America series Orphan Black that recently concluded its five season run. It received tons of love from its loyal fan base along with immense critical acclaim including an overdue Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Maslany in 2016.
Snowpiercer has no premiere date as of yet.
