One of the most acclaimed films of all time, Apocalypse Now has seen two previous releases. The original film screened in Cannes on May 10, 1979 before hitting theaters on August 15 of the same year. It was a box office hit upon initial release, accumulating $150 million worldwide. And while critics were mixed, the film still received eight Academy Award nominations, winning two for Best Sound and Best Cinematography. To this day, Apocalypse Now and its many masterful sequences such as “Ride of the Valkyries” are still paid homage to in motion pictures.

In 2001, Coppola released a 202-minute extended cut titled Apocalypse Now Redux in theaters and on DVD. This new version, simply titled Apocalypse Now Final Cut, is shorter than Redux, but longer than the original cut of the film.

Said Coppola: “But that version [REDUX] had all that had been cut out, restored. Later on, once again, when asked which version I personally wanted to be shown, I often felt that the original 1979 was too abruptly shortened, and Redux was too long, and settled on what I now felt was the perfect version, which is what we’re showing at Tribeca later this month, called Apocalypse Now Final Cut.”
