Hopkins, who won for his incredible performance in The Father, said he didn’t expect to win the award at his age. He also paid tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, who was the favorite to win Best Actor. The Welsh actor previously won Best Actor for portraying Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs in 1991.

“Good morning,” Hopkins greeted fans on Instagram. “Here I am in my homeland in Wales and at 83 years of age, I did not expect to get this award. I really didn’t. I’m very grateful to The Academy and thank you. I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us far too early. Again, thank you all very much. I really did not expect this. I feel very privileged. Thank you.”

Hopkins also listed off a list of names to thank in his Instagram caption as well.

“Thank you to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Sony Pictures Classics, Florian Zeller, UTA, Jeremy Barber, Christine Crais, Mitch Smelkinson, Juan Miguel Arias, Tara Arroyave, my wife and family.”
