Starz has released the official Blindspotting trailer for their upcoming sequel series to Lionsgate’s acclaimed comedy-drama film of the same name. The video features Hamilton star Jasmine Cephas Jones as she reprises her role from the 2018 movie as Ashley, who is suddenly faced with the difficult task of raising his son all alone after Rafael Casal’s Miles goes to jail. The series will be making its world premiere on June 11 at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, which will then be followed by its debut on June 13 across all Starz platforms in the U.S. and Canada.

The Blindspotting series picks up six months after the film and centers on Ashley, who is nipping at the heels of a middle-class life in Oakland until Miles, her partner of 12 years and father of their son, is suddenly incarcerated, leaving her to navigate a chaotic and humorous existential crisis when she is forced to move in with Miles’ mother and half-sister.

The series stars Jasmine Cephas Jones (Hamilton) as Ashley; Benjamin Turner as Earl, who is fresh out of prison, wearing an ankle monitor and just trying to kill time and lay low; Candace Nicholas-Lippman (Good Trouble) as Janelle, Ashley’s close friend who’s just returned to the neighborhood after spending many years in Bali; Jaylen Barron (Shameless) as Trish, Miles’ half-sister, who might be wilder than he is; Atticus Woodward (Shameless) as Sean, Ashley and Miles’ sweet, smart and energetic son; Helen Hunt (Mad About You, Twister) as Rainey, Miles’ mother who has strong opinions and holds family above all else; and Rafael Casal who reprises his role as Miles, Ashley’s ride-or-die partner of 12 years and father of their son.

The Blindspotting series is written and executive produced by Casal and Daveed Diggs, with the former serving as showrunner and recurring star, alongside Jess Wu and Keith Calder of Snoot Entertainment (One Night in Miami), Emily Gerson Saines, Ken Lee and Tim Palen of Barnyard Projects. The project will reunite Casal, Diggs, Wu and Calder after they’ve spent a decade working to bring the feature film to life.
The film opened to rave reviews from critics, currently maintaining a 94% approval rating from critics on review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes based on 160 reviews, who praised it for its fresh and timely take on the buddy comedy genre and for its powerful social commentary and Diggs’ performance.
