Clueless Reboot Series No Longer Moving Forward at Peacock

Clueless Reboot Series No Longer Moving Forward at Peacock

It has been nearly a year since we’ve last heard an update regarding CBS TV Studios’ Clueless reboot, and now The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the development of the series adaptation of the iconic 1995 teen film has been officially cancelled and is no longer moving forward at Peacock. Despite this, the outlet’s sources note that Clueless is still a valuable asset to CBS Studios and they are currently looking to redevelop the project with a different story.

The cancelled project was set to center around the character of Dionne from the original film, who was previously portrayed by Stacey Dash. This isn’t actually the first time that the classic film was adapted into the small screen as following the success of the Alicia Silverstone-led film, a Clueless sitcom was aired in 1996 on ABC which featured most of the original cast except Silverstone. The said teen sitcom only lasted for three seasons from 1996-1999 with the last two seasons airing on UPN.

The Clueless reboot was described as a baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latte and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong number two Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans. How does Dionne deal with the pressures of being the new most popular girl in school, while also unraveling the mystery of what happened to her best friend?

The project was written by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey (Will & Grace). American Gothic and No Tomorrow creator Corinne Brinkerhoff was attached to executive produce alongside her development executive Tiffany Grant. Brinkerhoff currently has an overall deal at CBS TV Studios, who was also attached to produce along with Clueless movie producer Robert Lawrence as an executive producer on the series.

Directed by Amy Heckerling, Clueless was a coming-of-age comedy film that starred Silverstone, Dash, Paul Rudd, and the late Brittany Murphy. It was inspired by Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma, with the film centering around the rich and popular Cher Horowitz who befriends a new student named Tai Frasier in order to give her a makeover. Since its release, it was an instant hit with critics and viewers and is still be considered one of the best teen films of all time. It has also gained quite a cult following due to its fashion, style, and hit character catchphrases and slangs.
