Ahead of its theatrical release tomorrow, Netflix has released the first 15 minutes of Zack Snyder’s newest zombie action-thriller Army of the Dead, providing viewers a better idea of the film’s premise. The video also includes a musical opening sequence that features an introduction to the main characters including Dave Bautista and Omari Hardwick. The film is set to arrive in theaters tomorrow on May 14, exclusively at 200 Cinemark locations. The wide release will then be followed by its global streaming debut on May 21 on Netflix.
“I did want to sort of shorthand this opening because I really wanted to get to [the fact that] these are veterans of a zombie war going back,” Snyder explained the process behind making the opening scene during ComingSoon.net’s recent interview with the filmmaker. “Not newbies who just learned how to navigate it. I knew I needed to do that within the confines of this title sequence. That was really my philosophical approach. Then in design, it was really just creating the vignettes. I just felt like I wanted to just show intimate to big and then small to big, you know, it was really about the individual things that happened and then these like large scale things that happen. I just felt like it was super fun, even musically. It was fun to do. You know, how I feel about title sequences. Just fun.”

Army of the Dead takes place following a zombie outbreak that has left Las Vegas in ruins and walled off from the rest of the world. When Scott Ward, a displaced Vegas local, former zombie war hero who’s now flipping burgers on the outskirts of the town he now calls home, is approached by casino boss Bly Tanaka, it’s with the ultimate proposition: Break into the zombie-infested quarantine zone to retrieve $200 million sitting in a vault beneath the strip before the city is nuked by the government in 32 hours. Driven by the hope that the payoff could help pave the way to a reconciliation with his estranged daughter Kate, Ward takes on the challenge, assembling a ragtag team of experts for the heist.
They include Maria Cruz, an ace mechanic and Ward’s old friend; Vanderohe, a zombie killing machine; Marianne Peters, a cynical helicopter pilot; Mikey Guzman, a go-for-broke influencer and Chambers, his ride-or-die; Martin, the casino’s head of security; a badass warrior known as the Coyote who recruits Burt Cummings, a slimy security guard; and German safe cracker named Dieter. Scott finds an unexpected emotional hurdle when Kate joins the expedition to search for Geeta, a mother who’s gone missing inside the city. With a ticking clock, a notoriously impenetrable vault, and a smarter, faster horde of Alpha zombies closing in, only one thing’s for certain in the greatest heist ever attempted: survivors take all.
