Simmons first appeared in the role for Zack Snyder’s 2017 movie Justice League, but with the DC Extended Universe taking a bit of a break from connected films after that, Simmons’ role was left up in the air. Now, though, it seems as if he’s ready to make his way back in a brand new film.

Batgirl will center on Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon. The character was first seen in the 1967 Batman series with the late Yvonne Craig playing Barbara. Batgirl’s first comic book appearance was in Detective Comics #357 by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino.

Batgirl is being helmed by Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from a screenplay by Christina Hodson (BumblebeeBirds of PreyThe Flash) with Kristin Burr (Cruella) producing. The movie will release exclusively on HBO Max.

Batgirl/Barbara Gordon’s last appearance in a live-action big-screen feature was in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin, released in 1997 and starring Alicia Silverstone in the role alongside George Clooney’s Batman and Chris O’Donnell’s Robin.
