Funimation has announced that the anime film Josee, the Tiger and the Fish will open at the Laemmle Monica Film Center in Los Angeles on November 5. Previously, the film had a limited theatrical showing in select theaters earlier this year in July. Tickets are now on sale for the opening in Los Angeles.
Josee, the Tiger and the Fish is a coming-of-age love story produced by Bones (My Hero Academia) and directed by Kotaro Tamura (Noragami). The film is based on a 1985 short story written by Akutagawa-prize-winning author Seiko Tanabe.
“Tsuneo, an ordinary college student and avid diver, unexpectedly becomes the caretaker of a wheelchair-bound young woman in order to raise money for this dream to go diving in Mexico,” says the official synopsis. “This young woman, who calls herself Josee after her favorite book characters, is sullen and demanding, but Tsuneo helps Josee interact with the outside world and learns more about Josee’s unique perspective, their feelings grow into love. The two begging to support each other in ways beyond just romance.”
Josee, the Tiger and the Fish was released in Japan in 2020 and was nominated for “Best Animation” in the 75th Mainichi Film Awards, as well as “Animation of the Year” for the 44th Japan Academy Film Prize. There’s no word yet on if the film will get another theatrical release or when it will release on any streaming platforms.
