The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Greg Berlanti (Titans, Doom Patrol, Prodigal Son) and Julie Plec (Legacies, The Originals, The Vampire Diaries) have won the rights to The Girls on the Bus, a series adaptation based on a chapter from Amy Chozick’s novel Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns and One Intact Glass Ceiling.

While inspired by Chasing Hillary, the Netflix series is reportedly not about Clinton or the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The Girls on the Bus will chronicle four female journalists who follow the every move of a parade of flawed presidential candidates, finding friendship, love, and a scandal that could take down not just the presidency but our entire democracy along the way. The series will be a fictional story with all fictional characters.

Plec will write the script alongside Chozick with Berlanti serving as executive producer. The series, whose title was inspired by the book The Boys on the Bus about the men who used to dominate the campaign trail, comes from Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, and Plec’s My So-Called Company.

Sarah Schechter will executive producer for Berlanti Productions. The Girls on the Bus brings the company’s scripted series total to 19 shows currently on the air. Plec and Berlanti have been friends for years and previously worked together on Dawson’s Creek and The CW’s The Tomorrow People.
