The Ruin tells the story of police officer Cormac Reilly who discovers two neglected children in a crumbling house in Galway, their mother dead upstairs from an overdose. Twenty years later, when another body is found, Reilly is drawn back to the cold case that has haunted his career, uncovering shocking secrets about police corruption and abuses of the church, and questioning who among his colleagues he can trust.

The movie will be produced by Oscar nominee Lee Magiday (The Favourite) who previously worked with Farrell on The Lobster. No cast has been set.

“I’m excited to be working with Troy and Andrew and teaming up again with Colin and Claudine on such thought-provoking material. The Ruin is a brilliant debut; an atmospheric, resonant and intricately woven story with deeply affecting characters,” said Magiday.

Chapel Place Productions was formed by Farrell alongside his sister and manager Claudine Farrell. The film comes from Chapel, Magiday’s Sleeper Films, and Hopscotch Features, with Troy Lum and Andrew Mason set to produce on behalf of Hopscotch.

McTiernan’s debut novel The Ruin is the first in a series of books to feature the Detective Cormac Reilly character. The sequel, titled The Scholar, was published this year, with a third book, The Good Turn, expected to be published in next year.
