Interview: Addison Rae & Tanner Buchanan Discuss Starring in He’s All That

Netflix’s romantic comedy He’s All That is otu today. The film stars Addison Rae, Tanner Buchanan, Madison Pettis, Peyton Meyer, Isabella Crovetti, Myra Molloy, and Annie Jacob. Both Matthew Lillard and Rachael Leigh Cook return from She’s All That, which the film is based on, although in different roles.

“In this reimagining of 1999’s She’s All That, teen social media influencer Padgett’s humiliating on-camera breakup goes viral, leading her to make a risky bet to save her reputation: She swears she can turn scruffy antisocial Cameron into prom king material,” says the official logline. “But things get complicated when she finds herself falling for him IRL.”

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with He’s All That stars Addison Rae and Tanner Buchanan about the new Netflix film, its theme of social media, and more.

Tyler Treese: Addison, there’s such an important and relevant message here about social media and the downside to putting forth a persona. How important is it for you to use your platform to spread something so significant?

Addison Rae: I think it’s of course a huge priority and I think that’s what I’ve kind of had to learn. I mean, it’s not always easy and just like Padgett shows in her life, it’s sometimes a lot of pressure and you feel like you need to put forward this perfect life and perfect set. It’s not always easy and it’s exhausting and it does affect you. I think for me, I’m continuously learning that every day there’s a line between what you want to post and what you want to keep private, but also just staying true to yourself I think is so important. Just putting your best foot forward, but also your most organic and real foot forward has a lot to do with that as well.

Tanner, She’s All That is such a classic coming-of-age film. How exciting was it to be put in that role of having that glow up and just be in this film?

Tanner Buchanan: It was extremely exciting. Obviously, I loved the original movie because I’m a huge fan of rom-coms and romantic movies in general. So, it was a big thing for me to be able to get this role. So I’m glad I could bring it to life. Hopefully, people like it just as much as the original and hopefully aren’t too harsh and agree that I did the role justice.

Addison, your character goes viral for all the wrong reasons in the film. There’s a big snot bubble. How fun was that scene to film, and how do you feel about knowing that there is now a snot bubble picture that will be all over the internet?

Rae: I’ve thought about that a lot, actually. That was so fun to film, like throwing the croquembouche, screaming and yelling, and snot and tears and crying. I mean, it was so intense and it was so fun. I was like, let me just go ahead and get all my anger out while we’re filming this and just go crazy. Yeah, it was incredible, but the snot bubble thing, worse things have happened. It is what it is. I feel like now people will be less harsh if there ever actually is a snot bubble picture of me from my personal life. So, I mean, hey, props to that photo. I’ll repost it. I like it. It was fun.

There you go. Tanner, you also appeared in Girl Meets World, which Peyton [Meyer]’s also in. How cool was it to be in another project with him and you actually got to fight him in the film?

Buchanan: Yeah. It was actually extremely fun. We hadn’t really seen each other since then. I don’t know how long ago it was, years, but we talked about all that and it was fun to see him again and hang out with him. It was also really fun to fight him. That’s something we never got to do before, and it was his first time fighting. So I always love a good fight scene with anybody that’s a good person.

Last question here, Addison, how great was it to get Kourtney Kardashians involved and have her play that fun role?

Rae: It was incredible. I mean, I’m so glad she was a part of this. She’s such an important person in my life and has been. Getting her to be a part of it was so much fun. I think everyone can agree it was a pleasant surprise. She was incredible on set. She was nervous, but I’m glad I was there to help her out. She did an amazing job. I’m excited for people to see, to see her acting skills.
