Following the recent addition of Bad Boys for Life actor Jacob Scipio, Deadline brings word that Brendan Fraser (The Mummy trilogy) has officially signed on to join Leslie Grace in HBO Max’s forthcoming live-action DC film Batgirl. The outlet notes that he is set to play a supervillain, which will reportedly be Firefly, a character created by France Herron and Dick Sprang in 1952.
This marks Fraser’s second role within the DC Universe as he is currently starring in the streamer’s hit series Doom Patrol, portraying the character of Robotman/Cliff Steele. The 52-year-old actor will also next be seen in two other high-profile films including Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, and Legendary’s comedy pic Brothers.

The Batgirl movie will be led by In the Heights star Leslie Grace as she portrays the role of Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon. The live-action film will also feature the return of Oscar winner J.K. Simmons, who has signed on to reprise his role as Commissioner Gordon, which he first portrayed in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
The character was first seen in the 1967 Batman series with the late Yvonne Craig playing Barbara. Batgirl’s first comic book appearance was in Detective Comics #357 by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino.

Batgirl will be directed by Bad Boys for Life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from a screenplay written by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey, The Flash). The film is a production by Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films, with Kristin Burr (Cruella) producing.
