Foy, who just recently won her second Emmy for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown, will play the role of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg in the series, named Doomsday Machine. The series has no official outlet attached to it as of yet but is being produced by Anonymous Content and wiip.
According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Doomsday Machine is largely based on the New York Times reporters Sheera Frenkel and Cecilia Kang’s book An Ugly Truth: Inside Facebook’s Battle for Domination. The series will also pull from reporting done by the pair at New York Times, as well as reporting done by The New Yorker’s Andrew Marantz.
The series will tell the story of the many political and social issues Facebook attempts to navigate on its growth as a social media platform. The series will focus on COO Sheryl Sandberg and Mark Zuckerberg, and will reportedly cover the period of time beginning around the 2016 Presidential election and the various internal struggles within the company to present-day issues.
Everything from recent reports suggesting that Facebook had a secret program that helped shield VIP users — including Donald Trump — from the normal rules and regulations of Facebook to allegations that the company was aware of mental health risks posed to younger users of Instagram will be tackled in the series.
