NEON has announced that production on David Cronenberg’s upcoming directorial feature comeback titled Crimes of the Future has finally begun in Athens, Greece, and is expected to last until this September. The sci-fi thriller will reunite Cronenberg with long-time collaborator Oscar nominee Viggo Mortensen, following A History of Violence and Eastern Promises.
“As we begin filming Crimes Of The Future, just two days into this new adventure with David Cronenberg, it feels like we’ve entered a story he collaborated on with Samuel Beckett and William Burroughs, if that were possible,” Mortensen said in a statement (via Deadline). “We are being pulled into a world that is not quite like this or any other, and yet is one that feels strangely familiar, immediate, and quite credible. I can’t wait to see where we end up.”

Crimes of the Future will take a deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. This evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, altering their biological makeup. While some embrace the limitless potential of trans-humanism, others attempt to police it. Either way, “Accelerated Evolution Syndrome” is spreading fast.
The film will star Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart, Léa Seydoux, Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar, Lihi Kornowski, Tanaya Beatty, Nadia Litz, Yorgos Karamichos, and Yorgos Pirpassopoulos.

Producers are Steve Solomos and Argonauts’ Panos Papahadzis with Joe Iacono, Thorsten Schumacher, Peter Touche, Christelle Conan, Aida Tannyan, Victor Loewy and Victor Hadida set as executive producers. Bonnie Do and Laura Lanktree have also been set as associate producers.
