The Many Saints of Newark Trailer Teases The Sopranos Prequel Movie

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the official The Many Saints of Newark trailer for New Line Cinema’s forthcoming prequel movie to the acclaimed HBO crime drama series The Sopranos, starring Michael Gandolfini as a young Tony Soprano, who is the son of the series’ lead star, the late James Gandolfini. The film is currently slated to arrive in theaters and on HBO Max on Friday, October 1.

The video, which you can check out below along with the poster, highlights young Tony Soprano’s close relationship with his uncle, Dickie Moltisanti, who has a heavy influence on his upbringing. It also gives us a preview of how Tony Soprano became the powerful crime boss we all know him to be.

Set in the 1960s and 1970s against the backdrop of the rising tensions between the Italian American and African American communities, The Many Saints of Newark follows a young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities—and whose influence over his nephew will help make the impressionable teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.

The prequel stars Alessandro Nivola (American Hustle), Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton), Jon Bernthal (Baby Driver), Corey Stoll (Ant-Man), Michael Gandolfini (The Deuce), Billy Magnussen (Game Night), Michela De Rossi (The Rats), John Magaro (Not Fade Away), Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) and  Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring films).

The Many Saints of Newark is directed by Alan Taylor from a screenplay written by series creator David Chase and Lawrence Konner. Producers are Chase, Konner, and Nicole Lambert, with Michael Disco, Marcus Viscidi, Toby Emmerich and Richard Brener set as executive producers.

The original series ran on-air for six seasons from 1999-2007. It starred James Gandolfini, Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falcon, Michael Imperioli, Dominic Chianese, and more. During its original run, it has been regarded as one of the greatest and most influential television drama series of all time—was honored with 21 Primetime Emmy Awards and five Golden Globe Awards.
